Vintage Grado Laboratory wooden tonearm with large and small counterweights, mounting spindle, headshell, and Shure M7-N21D cartridge with damaged stylus, being offered absolutely as-found and untested, for the purpose of repair, parts, or restoration. It was found as-shown among the items of an older neighbor who was a Radio/TV/Audio/Ham enthusiast and repairman. It may haven been used with an older Thorens turntable that hed had set up, but I cant verify or confirm at this point. I have no way to guarantee, verify, or represent its operating condition or completeness, and only the unit and parts as shown are included. I’ve been an audiophile since I was 12 and ordered my first amp and turntable thru the mail, after building my own speakers! Fast forward several decades, now I have more than I can handle. There are deals to be had, maybe you should have them, and get the same thrill I got when that first amp showed up on my porch. This is a vintage GRADO ‘LABORATORY’ TONEARM, the most sophisticated version of their famous wooden tonearm line. This was missing the rubber mounting disc when I first got it, but I tracked one down. It was rewired and had non-standard cartridge leads, but I fixed the latter with a BRAND NEW cartridge holder, purchased from Pats Audio Parts (a 40.00 value on its own). The rewire job was well done, so I left it. The supplied counterweight was too heavy, so Im including a nut, bolt, and washers to roll your own-- it works, but youve got to take care to assemble the stack of washers straight so it fits in the black aluminum nest. I soldered some gold-plated RCA sockets on the leads to play test, and it works (see last photo) . The set-up documentation is available online. Sometime in its 60-odd year lifespan, this one acquired some modifications— a cut-down cartridge sled, a non-standard lead pattern to go with the non-standard leads; a different counterweight that’s almost certainly too heavy. It also lost its machined rubber plate that goes under the aluminum cone. Rather than undertake a restoration right away, I tested it as is, with an old Shure M7 cartridge mounted and some gold-plated RCA jacks soldered directly to the arm wiring (see the pics on my messy workbench). It worked, and sounded great. It’d probably be better to restore it- get a lighter counterweight, a new rubber plate, and re-solder the wires and get a new sled— but it will play just fine if correctly put together as-is. Offered are two Grado Lab Series wooden Tonearms and parts. They should be rewired or at least one of them should have current wiring redone. There are enough parts to possibly make two complete, definitely enough to complete one tonearm. The Grado wood series is a wonderful tonearm when set up properly.
