This Manley Chinook is in absolute minty fresh condish. Such an amazing phono preamp! Yes, the stories about this are completely true and this tube phono stage sounds unbelievable. I used it to replace the built in phono preamps on my McIntosh receiver (also for sale here) and I was stunned by how great this made my system sound. The Macs preamp was really good, mind you, but this just kicked it up a notch. Im sure if you are looking at this and have read this far then you know all about it. I haven’t been able to test any of this equipment and I have some concerns about the electrical safety (there is no obvious earth/ground which runs the risk of exposed electrical connections/metal surfaces not being grounded), so it is sold on the basis that it is ‘for parts or not working’. A set of three vintage Goodsell (of Brighton, England) units dating from 1955 according to the date code on the original ECC83 tube (which has been replaced by me because it was only running at 25% - I have substituted it with a period Mullard ECC83). I believe it was introduced in 1953 and the output is 4.5W. The pre-amplifier ’tone control unit’ corrects for vinyl, radio and microphone characteristics according to an old advert I found online. They haven’t been used for many years and I expect the main capacitor will need to be replaced by something more modern (the original capacitor is most likely to be leaky and will probably go up in a puff of smoke if power were applied to it). The can appears to have three different capacitors in it, so I expect it will have to be replaced with three external single capacitors, but the values are shown on the can. As you can see, the interconnecting wires are all present which are fitted to McMurdo octal connectors, but are not labeled so the the buyer will need to work it all out. All of the valves on the power amp have been tested on a valve tester and are working fine. The 5Z4 rectifier tube is a modern Russian replacement which, I notice, is slightly loose between the glass and the base. I suggest a spot of soft glue such as UHU is used to stop it moving (do not use superglue). The Brimar 6V6 tubes appear to be original. I did test them on my AVO valve tester and they are slighly below specification, but are still good tubes with close performance. At least two of the original knobs have some damage. The buyer will need to fit a spacing block between the radio unit and its fascia plate. I will include the screws that I removed during disassemblty but it may not be a complete set of screws. One issue of concern is that the Bakelite mains input plug has some Bakelite material missing and the live contact is exposed. The buyer will need to make this safe by either repairing the plug, finding a new plug, or better stil, replacing it with an grounded IEC socket. It is only suitable for mains voltages of 200-250V. It is not suitable for North American or Japanese voltages unless used with a step-up transformer. VERY IMPORTANT: Please remember to connect a speaker or dummy load to the output of valve amplifiers before turning them on or you can do serious, permanent, damage to the amplifier.
