Offered for your consideration is a pair of GENESIS Physics Corp. L200A 8 inch woofers that were removed from my early-production GENESIS I speakers, USA-manufactured c.1975. These are the same model woofers that GENESIS used throughout the 1970’s on the Model I, I+, II, III, and others. Plus, they’re identical to their later L200B woofers from the 1, 10, 20, 210, and 320, only difference being they switched to gray surrounds from the former green. What’s more, these woofers are also correct for the majority of EPI/Epicure models from the 1970’s since GENESIS was an offshoot of Winslow Burhoe’s company. So, please take a look at my large photos and read the remaining description text to decide if these outstanding GENESIS woofers are correct for your needs. This pair of GENESIS woofer is in clean, excellent condition. They have structurally perfect paper cones and flawless voice coil dustcaps. Plus, the bronze-anodized steel baskets are in great shape with no dings or scratches, and the large, double-stacked magnet structure has no chips, just a bit of oxidation on the top plates. And, most importantly, the aged original factory foam suspension was replaced with modern polyether foam surrounds in the correct gentle angle or “filleted” center profile. The original green surrounds that GENESIS used in the mid-70s haven’t been available for decades. Most U.S. speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s to 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These surrounds were no exception; they had basically turned to dust. As you likely know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty or missing surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time—so surround replacement is critical. Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. GENESIS woofers lack a flange gasket, so first I cleaned the basket flanges and cone edges to remove the dried foam remnants and stubborn factory adhesives holding them, which takes some time to do thoroughly. Then, I glued the inner surround lips to the cones. Next, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after careful centering to verify no coil rub. Lastly, I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between the steps to achieve the tidy results you see here. Now these woofers are in top shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds! Naturally, they’ve been fully tested after refoaming and sound terrific—very strong and clear with fast, detailed midrange and solid low-end. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a perfectly-matched 4.3? each, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges measure 8¼” in diameter, they stand 3¾” tall, and the four-corner mounting hole pattern is 5½” adjacent / 7?” diagonal, c-t-c (though not necessary, all eight mount holes were used during manufacture).
