When I replaced this legendary uni-pivot gem around 40 years ago with a Signature Grado tonearm I aspired of installing it in a second turntable. Instead, I still use the same exact TT and Grado tonearm, and the Formula 4 has sat undisturbed on the top shelf of a climate-controlled closet in our home ever since. I do recall the tonearm sounding outstanding, natural & open with most any cartridge I used I think mostly due to its damped unipivot arm and its superb tracking (note that the installed free Nagatron 380CE cartridge was working when I put this away). It was not a tonearm for beginners though, I also recall, taking some patience and skill to set up, but it was well worth it in the end. Comes with original box, instructions, mounting template, alignment protractor, silicone fluid, and accessories. Up for sale is the legendary uni-pivot arm, The Mayware Formula IV tonearm designed by Peter Pritchard. This tonearm is very popular on modded ARs and the looks also make it a favorite on vintage Michell and Transcriptor turntables. When low mass tonearms are mentioned from the 70s, three tonearms come to mind: The Grace 707, the Infinity Black Widow and the Mayware Formula IV. Of the three, the Mayware is the only uni-pivot. Some people love uni-pivots. The theory being, the less bearings, the better. With the Uni-pivot you have one and its not really even a bearing at all. It is a pivot point. The type often seen on turntable top brushes. Who this arm is for: This tonearm is a collectors item. You should be fairly familiar with setting up tonearms or this one will frustrate you. It can be a bit fiddly but if you know what you are doing, the rewards are worth it. If you like messing about with your turntable, you might have fun with this one. This arm is not for the new audiophile who barely knows what a uni-pivot is. It is a low mass arm which means it tracks very lightly and it plays best with high compliance cartridges. If this sounds like Greek to you then you might want to pass or have a tech set it up for you. Some suggested cartridges for this arm are the ADC XLM, Sonus, Ortofon M15/20e, Shure V15, and Pickering XSV3000. I will include my Ortofon M15E cart with it. You would just have to provide a stylus. This cart is a great match for it. Addendum: there have been reports on the internet that you need the XTC counterweight to adjust the azimuth on this tonearm. That is not necessarily true. While the XTC does do a good job, the stock counterweight does it also just fine. The method is documented in the user manual and can be found on Vinyl Engine. The stock counterweight is low slung and it can be rotated as to offset the azimuth balance. The XTC is not needed to do this.

Got this off an AR XA turntable I purchased a while back (available in another listing). I wanted to restore the table and arm but decided that I dont have the time to undertake yet another project. Tonearm appears in very good condition and all the parts including anti-skate is there. I checked the connections (leads to phono cable) to ensure that there are no broken connections. The only thing I noticed was the headshell seemed to be tilted downward a bit. I believe it is a Mayware Formula 4 although there is no print on it, please let me know if you can confirm otherwise. There is another locking nut underneath the cardboard piece the arm is sitting on. Will be shipped double boxed and counterweight and anti-skate removed and packed separately to avoid damage. Comes from a smoke free home.

The tonearm is missing the following: counterweight, connecting cable with attaching plug (connecting socket on bottom of support column is functioning properly), anti-skating weight (anti-skating thread has been replaced). Cartridge pins have been replaced and continuity checked from pins to connecting socket verified. Cuing mechanism works fine, however since no counterweight is available it hasnt been tested with proper tracking force applied to cuing platform. It does function with the total weight of arm in place so normal function can be expected. Unipivot point has been inspected and appears to be in perfect condition, however no damping material is provided. It will be carefully packaged to insure undamaged delivery.
