Its Low Noise MC/MM Phono Preamp and Control Preamp are refined versions of the 3020A/1020A design. The Stereo Volume Potentiometer is a high quality ALPS not typically found in other NAD units. Another nice feature is that the Power ON/OFF Mute is all electronic instead of being controlled by the position of the Power Switch. This means that the Power ON/OFF muting will function properly even when switched ON and OFF remotely by a Smart Power Strip, etc. I would not recommend using the Switched AC Outlets for Power Amps or heavy loads.

This NAD C315BEE was buzzing on arrival due to a defective Main Capacitor. I upgraded both to Chemicon KMH series 105C rated caps. Many of the original JH branded Electrolytic Caps were also testing bad, so I upgraded the audio capacitors to Bipolar nichicon and ELNA, and I upgraded the Power Supply caps to mostly 105C rated nichicon, ELNA, etc. For added versatility, I have repurposed the (fixed line level) Tape Output RCA Jacks to be (variable level) Preamp Outputs suitable for a powered Subwoofer, external Power Amp, etc. Im also including a new 6-button learning remote programmed for Mute On/Off, Volume Up/Down, and 3 Input Selects DISC, CD, and AUX. Rated at 40 NAD watts per channel, the 45 Volt Main Rails and 10,000uF Main Caps provide plenty of IHF Power as well. While the reviewers are quite complimentary of this model, some have mentioned their desire for Preamp Outputs. VOILA!! It should be noted that the Standby Mode draws similar power and generates similar heat to the ON Mode. I recommend turning OFF the Main Switch on the Rear Panel when not in use.

In typical fashion, this NAD 7220PE arrived with shorted Output Transistors in one Power Amp channel. Fortunately, the fuses blew before any driver transistors were damaged, so this unit is otherwise all original silicon. It is the 3220PE Power Envelope version of the 3020e integrated amplifier and the 4220 tuner in one package. I Souped Up this unit by upgrading the output transistors in both channels to Toshiba C5200/A1943 complementary pairs which are intended for 100W high fidelity amplifiers. NAD uses them in their C series amps. They can easy handle and take full advantage of the higher +/-40V Power Envelope Rails. I also increased the Main Caps from 4700uF to 6800uF 105C Chemicon for the same extra Punch as the 7225PE. I replaced all of the electrolytic caps in the Integrated Amplifier and Tuner Audio sections. The audio caps have been upgraded to ELNA CE Bipolar and nichicon Fine Gold Audio along with Vishay Film in the Tone Control section. The new power supply caps are Chemicon and Rubycon. I have rewired the Tape Out jacks on this 7220PE to be the variable Preamp Outputs for use with a powered subwoofer, additional power amp, etc. These are the same preamp outputs as on the 7225PE and allow these units to be used in a larger system as a Phono Preamp and/or Preamp/Tuner. I have been testing this unit with Boston HD-5 bookshelf speakers and a Velodyne subwoofer, and it sounds great. Finally, I upgraded the ultra sensitive Bias trimpots to multi turn equivalents for more accurate and more stable adjustment. It is literally an integrated amp with a tuner on top.

12/6/2023 Update: I have upgraded the 4 trimmers for Power Amp Bias and Offsets to multi turn equivalents. They allow for more precise adjustments that will not be rattled out of spec. Greetings EU and other 220V eBayers! This ones for you. I bought this NAD 7220PE 220V unit long ago for parts, but found it to be in such good condition that I couldnt bear to break it down. So I recapped it instead! The audio caps have been upgraded to nichicon MUSE BP and Fine Gold Audio, while the Power supply caps are nichicon, Rubycon, Panasonic, and CDE/Ilinois Capacitor. I also removed the PE Fuses to reconfigure this unit as a 7020e, which is literally a 3020e and a 4220 Tuner with separate Power Supply. Ill put them back in on request, but I do this whenever the original Power Amp transistors are all still intact to preserve and protect them from the excessive PE Voltage Rails that can drive them beyond their safe area and cause them to fail. It also more closely emulates the operation and performance of the iconic 3020 Power Amp. Some claim the original RCA output transistors in this unit to be the best. For added versatility, I have repurposed the (fixed line level) Tape Output RCA Jacks to be the (variable level) Preamp Outputs suitable for a powered Subwoofer, external Power Amp, etc. Ive been testing them with my Boston Acoustics HD5 Bookshelfs and Velodyne Subwoofer. Absolutely beautiful pristine example of one Marantz great preamps . It has been lovingly cared for and sounds beautifully. It was fully gone through serviced and recapped by Stereo Rehab a couple years ago in the Chicago area and when they service equipment they go through and renew EVERYTHING!! While this does reduce the specified IHF Dynamic Power, I have compensated somewhat on this unit by Beefing_Up the RMS Performance with upgraded Main Caps, going up from 4700uf to 6800uf Chemicon. For sale is a used Hafler SE100 Preamplifier. It is a fully J-fet preamp so it sounds great. Borrowing some sonic attributes from its vacuum tube cousins. I fully recapped this preamp, including the phono board. I used premium Nichicon Fine Gold and Panasonic FM types. The tone defeat switch was noisy and didnt benefit from a Caig cleaning, so I replaced it.The preamp was cleaned completely. All inputs and outputs Caig coated. I tested the entire preamp and it sounds great. Being Fet input to output really lends to a fantastic delicate mid and top end. I tested the moving coil input and it sounds really nice. Plenty of gain. Included is the preamp and a copy of the manual. All sales are final. You will not get stuck with a non-functioning unit. Take a second to look at my feedback. Thank you....

I have owned this preamp for about 6 years. I have recapped dozens of solid state and tube amplifiers, so I did this one as well with premium quality capacitors. I have completely re-capped this unit except for the MC phono preamp section. The tone control board and power supply caps have been replaced and the unit has also been adjusted according to the Yamaha C2a shop manual. I have also recently removed, disassembled and cleaned a dirty stereo/mono toggle switch. Tone controls, volume and balance controls are absolutely quiet, no scratchy sounds. The unit is smooth, dead quiet and clear as a bell. It is in very good shape for its age. All switches are tested and work as they should. The only cosmetic issues are a couple of tiny nicks shown in the photos and a light scratch. The iPhone pics dont do it justice. Looks better in person. The phono cartridge load selector switch may need a cleaning. The MC position needs a wiggle to get a good contact, but its possible and the MC phono preamp works. Lastly, one of the two Phono input RCA (phono 2) doesnt pass a signal. I tried to diagnose it but couldnt. Im selling this because my main rig is a minimalist tube amp set up and I dont listen to vinyl much anymore.

Whenever I manage to acquire an NAD 3220PE with all of the original transistors intact, I prefer to preserve and protect the Driver and Output Transistors by disabling the PE Supply, effectively re-configuring the unit as a 3020e. This more accurately emulates the operation and performance of the iconic 3020 Power Amp section while also staying within the specified safe area of the output transistors, making them less likely to fail. In the 50s, when Tape Recorders were all the newest hi tech rage, the manufacturers HAD to make the audio better than the existing phonos in order to sell this expensive new toy. This little amp has an aluminum chassis, well designed class A amplification using a hot 5879 front end tube, into two stages thru a 12AX7 then into a 6AQ5 pentode output. The 6AQ5 tube is the subminiature version of the legendary 6V6,considered the cleanest pentode made. .This amp will do Hi Z mics, instruments in line in, and give sweet tube-essence, clean or dirty depending on input level. The amp has been 100% re-capped with vintage American caps, electros replaced with higher values. The tubes are all vint.US NOS. The amp runs cool and very quiet. Note the size of the Power and output transformers. Way oversize for a single tube audio output. The power transformer is separate to the chassis. This was done to insure minimum hum, away from the hum sensitive tape head. Transformer could safely (hum & noise) be mounted to rear of chassis. The 6AQ5 tube is the subminiature version of the legendary 6V6,considered the cleanest pentode made. .This amp will do Hi Z mics, instruments in line in, and give sweet tube-essence, clean or dirty depending on input level. The amp has been 100% re-capped with vintage American caps, electros replaced with higher values. The tubes are all vint.US NOS. The amp runs cool and very quiet. Note the size of the Power and output transformers. Way oversize for a single tube audio output. The power transformer is separate to the chassis. This was done to insure minimum hum, away from the hum sensitive tape head. Transformer could safely (hum & noise) be mounted to rear of chassis.
