Die beiden Vorgängermodelle CDP-950 und CDP-970 hatten beispielsweise noch eine Kunststofffront und eine verhältnismäßig einfache Lade. Die Nachfolger CDP-991, 997, 911 und 915 besaßen zwar auch weiterhin eine Metallfront, haben aber was die Gehäuseverarbeitung angeht, wieder abgebaut. Die Lade besteht hier z.B. wieder aus Plastik. Der CDP-990 ist der einzige 9er Player, welcher die gleiche Lade aus dem Sony-Spezialwerkstoff (Mineral-Kunststoffmischung) besitzt wie sie in den ES-Playern verwendet wurde. Dass das Gerät wertig verarbeitet ist erkennt man auch an dem Gewicht von 4,8kg. Er besitzt umfangreiche Wiedergabe und Programmierfunktionen und weiterhin einen variablen, fernbedienbaren Kopfhörer- und Cinchausgang. Somit ließe sich der Player auch direkt an einer Endstufe betrieben. Praktisch ist dies auch, wenn sich der Verstärker nicht fernbedienen lässt. Natürlich ist auch ein optischer Digitalausgang vorhanden. Das Display ist sehr umfangreich und lässt sich bezüglich der Informationsdarstellung anpassen. Für mich hat diese Serie auch das schönste Display. Es ist groß, gut ablesbar, übersichtlich und als DOT-Matrix ausgeführt. Das Gerät wurde von mir mit Echtholzseiten in „Makassar“ ausgestattet um ihn optisch ein wenig aufzuwerten. Es handelt sich hier nicht um mit einfacher Dekorfolie beklebtes Holz, sondern um Echtholzfurnier. (0,6mm starkes Furnier, gepresst auf 16mm MDF) In diesem Finish macht er auf jeden Fall eine Menge her und ist sicherlich ein optischer Blickfang. Geliefert wird das Gerät incl. der originalen Anleitung und einer Alternativfernbedienung (RM-D420) mit der sich auch der regelbare Line-Out steuern lässt. In zwei weiteren Angeboten biete ich noch den passenden Tuner (ST-S550ES) und Verstärker (TA-F550ES) im gleichen Design an. Der optische Zustand: Wie auf den Bildern zu sehen befindet sich das Gerät in einem ausgezeichneten Zustand.
