This is a great example of a very highly regarded deck from Denon. Coming towards the end of the cassette era, this machine is based on decades of incremental improvements, and represents the pinnacle of analogue tape technology. It is in very nice cosmetic condition, looks and sounds fantastic, and comes complete with its original shipping carton and the printed user manual from Denon, so you can get the most out of it. This deck has a fabulous mechanism made by Alps – by far our favourite OEM supplier of these parts. It has two very high-quality motors and make use of proper enclosed microswitches throughout the mechanism, which are far less prone to degradation and oxidation than the metal leaf switches found in most cassette decks from this era. As you would expect from Denon, the tape transport in this deck is excellent. It is highly stable and performs well on all the tapes in our test set, which includes a range of formulations and brands. This deck has been serviced, including checking and cleaning the drive belts, replacing where necessary, and cleaning and lubricating the mechanism. The servicing work also included cleaning the switches and testing and cleaning the internal electrical contacts. It has been inspected for electrical safety and put through a full PAT test, in line with current guidance. It is fitted with a brand-new mains plug, which meets current CE and UKCA safety standards, and is fitted with the correct 3A fuse. The electrical alignment has been checked, using a test cassette, oscilloscope and external level meters. This process includes setting the recording levels, playback levels, meter calibration, bias and tape speed. The tape transport has been tested, cleaned and demagnetised. Cosmetically, this deck is in great condition for its age. The display is clear, bright and looks great, the front and back panels are both in superb shape with only the most minor signs of use. The lid is also in excellent condition, and free of the scratches and scuffs we often see on stackable Hi-Fi equipment. Please take a look at the pictures.
