Incorporating four independent power amps, the BX-3 MKii functions as a stereo amplifier, a 3-channel amplifier or a 4-channel amplifier, and up to four pairs of speaker systems can be driven at a time. Similar to its predecessor, the BX-3, the MKii version just has more available power. DBX didnt really need to make the MKii but they did anyway. After all, you can never have enough power, right? High level, long term operation of the unit will sometimes cause the internal chassis temperatures to be increased. When the internal temperatures reaches over 70c the cooling fan will be operated automatically to dissipate the heat generated from the unit and to maintain long term operational reliability, and since it operates very quietly, music reproduction will never be disturbed. One its many very cool features is the impedance switch on the rear for 2-to-16 ohms and 6-to-16 ohms. This allows for (probably) any speaker system to be powered safely and effortlessly.About DBX...Inventor and audio engineer David Blackmer was the founder of dbx and Earthworks Audio. His development of dbx expansion-compression technology in the early 1970s pushed the performance level of recording and playback systems beyond their previously accepted limits. Like his better-known colleague Ray Dolby, Blackmer found a unique way to work around the dynamic restrictions of analog tape. His original RMS detector circuit, which was the foundation for dbx, was most elegant and original engineering, said Stereophile editor John Atkinson.Blackmer also made great strides in reducing noise and distortion levels and extending the frequency response of analog electronics. He was one of a handful of audio engineers who questioned the received wisdom that there was no useful information in the audio range above the typical 20kHz limit of human hearing. He is best known as the inventor and founder of dbx.
