The Clarus CODA is an ultra-high-performance USB DAC and headphone amplifier with an integrated MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) audio renderer. Designed for use with smartphones, tablets, and computers, CODA is compatible with Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows (7–10) devices and features a 3.5mm stereo jack, a USB-A connector, two volume buttons, and three selectable roll-off filters. Whether listening to your favorite downloads or streaming from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Qobuz, or Spotify, CODA can deliver higher than CD quality audio. When paired with an MQA core decoder (i.e., streaming with Tidal, Nugs, and Xiami or when used with Audirvana or Roon media servers), the CODA renderer delivers the complete MQA experience, letting you hear what the artist and the music producer heard during the original performance. A very rare classic combo that seldom appear on the resale market. The genesis of CODA Technologies began in March of 1985. Originally incorporated as Continuum Electronics, an independent design and engineering consultancy, the company was founded by Eric Lauchli, B.D. Dale and Lorin Peterson, former members of the R&D and technical support staff of the Threshold Corporation, then an innovative leader in high-performance solid state audio electronics. On consignment from the second owner, who purchased the pair in 2021 from the original owner. Both preamplifier and amplifier function perfectly. Both are rated 8/10 due to age and minor scratches on the top of the case. Functionally the amplifier is absolutely flawless. The preamplifier exhibited some pot noise but with exercise and a touch of DeOxit, the problem resolved itself.. You can see the components in action on Youtube at youtube.com/watch?v=3r5-6iztaEsA reviewer described the sound of Coda FET Preamps thusly: FETs are inherently transconductance devices, meaning that an input voltage controls an output current. Unlike conventional transistors, FETs have extremely high input impedance (about 10 megaOhms - similar to vacuum tubes). The FET “senses” the audio signal without drawing current from the source. This eliminates complex interactions with the source, allows maximum performance from each system element, and greatly reduces the chance of cable characteristics altering the sound. The absence of input current in FETs allows high-bias currents for linearity and speed without sacrificing DC parameters. I am not an engineer, but besides build quality could the use of FETs explain two virtues that I heard with this preamplifier in my system. First, the apparent and easy to hear two-fold qualities of color/tonality/bloom along with three-dimensional imaging and ambient space between these instruments which is the best of what tubes have to offer (Remember, FETs work and measure in a similar fashion like tubes). As great as the preamp is, the amp is extremely special. One of a very few zero negative global feedback Class-A designs, one reviewer described the sound as . . . precise and clear, with the touch of golden glow to the midrange that’s the calling card of a good class-A design. There was no mechanical noise, and, very surprisingly for an amp of this vintage, the Coda was extremely quiet: I could hear no more noise through the tweeters of the Dynaudios than I had with the Soulution 711. How could this be? This thing is 20 years old.Please note, due to the nature of vintage components, NO WARRANTY IS EXTENDED OR OFFERED. Returns will only be considered if the components are not as described. Packing and shipping are charged at actual cost and items will be fully insured. It is HIGHLY recommended that buyers opt to double-box the components as the original boxes are going on twenty years old at this point.
