Vintage 1991 CARVER SD/A-490t High End Tube CD Player Japan Made Audiophile. Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Ground Advantage.

This Carver SD/A-390t CD changer is a must-have for any audiophile. With a vacuum tube design and a capacity for up to 5 discs, you can enjoy your music in high-quality sound. The CD changer features a headphone jack and is compatible with SD memory cards, giving you more options for playing your music. The included aftermarket remote and manual make it easy to use and control. The sleek black color and compact design make it a perfect addition to any home audio system. The option to either use the tube buffer or not or use it as a transport is unusual. This unit seems to function, it did when I packed it away, but there are occasional squeals when the carousel is sliding in and out (probably just needs oil and/or serviced). It does aerate and the carousel using disc skip or when playing. It reds which tray the discs are in. There is a volume control so you can just plug this straight in to an amplifier with no need for a pre-amp. The sound was/is glorious and very controlled but I have essentially gone all vinyl (I have 10,000 so I really dont need a cd player and I have a Cambridge player for my DVD that will play a cd if I want it). And I have also gone from all separates to an integrated amp with a tiny Pro-Ject tuner that works just fine in my area to listen to NPR. Since it is a vintage piece of equipment, I am selling it as parts/repair only but I am pretty sure it will operate for you. The changer can play the cds in order or you can choose random. Ask any questions you may have and I will do my best to answer them. I do not have the original box but it will be well packed and padded. Its rare to find a CD player with a tube output section. If you do a deep dive on this in the forums and audio reviews, like most outlier technologies, you will find some who LOVE it and some who dont. What I can say is this player to my ears sounds quite lush and detailed. Im a tube guy anyway, so perhaps Im just partial to the sound. If you havent heard a tube CD player and would like to, youre in luck. All functions on this player and remote work, however, something about the Carver CD technology of the early 90s makes them somewhat to very unstable with more modern CDs. If your collection is made up primarily of older CDs, from the 90s and before, you should be fine. This particular model has a reputation for being a little skittish, and Ive found this one to be just that.....the CDs it likes, it seems to be ROCK solid; but the ones it doesnt, well....some are frankly unplayable. Maybe theres a magic hack where you replace a tiny transformer or capacitor somewhere that totally stabilizes it for all discs.... Would be worth the effort to figure out! Please look at the pictures and video for important descriptive info. You get the player and the remote with this auction. If you live in or near Los Angeles, youre more than welcome to pick this up in person and avoid the cost and risk of shipping. Sold as is to highest bidder. CD player in excellent cosmetic condition and plays great. Only issue is when carousel spins to select disc it seems louder than it should be but still works fine. Maybe can be lubricated somehow, not sure what the issue is. All functions related to CD play work great including the soft EQ function.
