Fine sounding phono stage. Kills all on board preamps built into turntables. This 551p accomodates MM only. Provides 39db gain w/RIAA equalization. Original had 225pf capacitance. Too much. Most MM cartridges are looking for 100-200pf total. Adding in cables and tonearm wiring and capacitance can approach 350pf or even more. Audio Technica, Ortofon, and many other cartridges become screechy and irritating especially at higher volume. Bright systems can make it worse. This unit has had the 225pf caps replaced with 68pf. Matches most cartridges nicely. If you have an automatic turntable and it has a mute switch, I recomend passing on Cambridge. The Cambridge units Ive had all cause pop in speakers when tonearm is lowered. Not a defect just design issue. Many vintage tables had shorting circuits activate when tonearm lifts. I dont know of any modern tables that short signal path. I state this because when I ran into this several yrs ago it took me a long time to find Cambridge at fault. Includes power adaptor.
