This is a special chrome tape Maxell XL II 90. It is a used tape. This is a tape deck speed and azimuth calibration setup cassette with lots of extra tones. (tape deck not included) Maxell chrome XL II 90 Cassette with lots of useful test tones recorded on it. The cassettes have all been recorded on my nakamichi ZX7 tape deck that has been fully serviced and calibrated (January 2023) using a professional set up. Nakamichi used to produced all their own calibration cassettes on ZX machines due to having full manual adjustment control of the azimuth and bias settings. Most machine do not have this option so will not be able to produce as accurate recording due to imperfections of tape travel. I am able to ensure the perfect azimuth alignment and bias levels for each individual cassette recorded. I also used computer software to give a very accurate level. The cassettes are also double checked with a sony quartz locked tape deck. So the tones speeds are very accurate measuring lower than 0.04 wow and flutter. I have been selling these tapes for over 3 years now with hundreds of happy customers. Please see my feedback. Up for sale is my newly restored Sony TC-K615S stereo cassette deck. The deck features 3 heads, an erase, playback, and record head. The unit has a built in recording calibration mode and quartz lock servo for accurate playback speed as well. This deck is an example of the peak of Dolby noise reduction as it features Dolby B, C, and S The cassette deck was painstakingly restored which included removing the original deteriorated belts and replacing them with new belts, replacing the pinch roller, and replacing the notoriously faulty Sony X-3363-501-1 gear on the TCM-190 tape transport mechanism. The tape transport mechanism was also thoroughly cleaned and new lubrication applied. Hours of labor went into this restoration. The sale includes the deck and its original box, though the box is incomplete and not in very good condition. Shipping to addresses in the USA only. No returns on this item.

To check your deck mechanism condition do following: 1. Read the deck Speed specifications (1-7/8 +/- ….%). 2. Calculate +/-….Hz tolerance from 1000, 3000 or 3150 Hz. 3. Playback ANY tape for 2 minutes to warm up motors and mechanism. 4. Playback the 1, 3 or 3.15 kHz Speed tape from the beginning of the tape for 1 min. Note the frequency in Hz at the end of the 1 min. portion of the tape. Say this is the Frequency at the Beginning of the Speed tape. 5. Stop the deck. Flip over the cassette. The 1 min. portion becomes the last minute of the tape. 6. Playback the tape from that 1 min. position and note the frequency in Hz at the beginning of that 1 min. portion of the tape. Say this is the Frequency at the End of the Speed tape. 7. Check if the frequency difference in Hz is within the decks Speed specifications tolerance. If not, a number of things could be the reason: too high back tension of the supply reel (dirty friction felt or misalignment), not enough friction in the capstan-pinch roller pair (dirty or dried out pinch roller), dried out capstan bearings lubrication, dried out and loose capstan belt, dried out motor bearings lubrication etc. 8. Finally, calculate the Average Frequency. F average = (F beginning + F end)/2. Calculate the Average Frequency Deviation from the Tape Nominal Frequency. Deviation = F average - F nominal. I used my late serial number Nakamichi Dragon to record the 3 Khz test tone as the tape speed is factory adjusted and fixed and the W&F of the deck is close to 0.015%, maybe the lowest you can get from a cassette deck. To record the 10khz test tone I calibrated the playback head of my BX-300 deck using a new sealed BASF IEC/DIN standard calibration tape (picture n.4) and my oscilloscope, and each test tape I record, I use the oscilloscope to calibrate the record head as much accurate as possible, just to prevent any cassette shell imperfections. I use only NEW TDK D-30 or Maxell C-30 cassettes. This cassette is not an original test tape, but you can get pretty accurate results adjusting your deck using it. Check my feedback for this item. Cassette Tape Deck speed alignmentThe tape frequency reading gradually drops slowly towards the end of 5 min. portion of the tape. This is normal, and it depends on the deck mechanism condition. To check your deck mechanism condition do following: 1. Read the deck Speed specifications (1-7/8 +/- ….%). 2. Calculate +/-….Hz tolerance from 1000, 3000 or 3150 Hz. 3. Playback ANY tape for 2 minutes to warm up motors and mechanism. 4. Playback the 1, 3 or 3.15 kHz Speed tape from the beginning of the tape for 1 min. Note the frequency in Hz at the end of the 1 min. portion of the tape. Say this is the Frequency at the Beginning of the Speed tape. 5. Stop the deck. Flip over the cassette. The 1 min. portion becomes the last minute of the tape. 6. Playback the tape from that 1 min. position and note the frequency in Hz at the beginning of that 1 min. portion of the tape. Say this is the Frequency at the End of the Speed tape. 7. Check if the frequency difference in Hz is within the decks Speed specifications tolerance. If not, a number of things could be the reason: too high back tension of the supply reel (dirty friction felt or misalignment), not enough friction in the capstan-pinch roller pair (dirty or dried out pinch roller), dried out capstan bearings lubrication, dried out and loose capstan belt, dried out motor bearings lubrication etc. 8. Finally, calculate the Average Frequency. F average = (F beginning + F end)/2. Calculate the Average Frequency Deviation from the Tape Nominal Frequency. Deviation = F average - F nominal.
