This Ayre QB-9 was inherited from a family member who paired it with an Apple Mini running Audivarna, a NAD analog amplifier, and PSB floor standing speakers. I’m not set up for a dedicated computer-based source so have chosen not to keep this DAC. I tested the QB-9 in my audio system using both a Macbook Air and an HP/Wintel laptop using USB output to the QB-9 to the analog inputs of a Peachtree pre-amp / Peachtree 220 amp with Paradigm speakers. The QB-9 tested well showing the resolution of the files being played and sounded great. When I was first introduced to the Ayre DX5, I was pretty much an Oppo and McIntosh fan and had been for years...I was familiar with Ayre and their reputation and knew through trade shows and friends who were dealers, that they were as passionate and committed as any A/V company in business.Anyone who engineers and builds a $10,000 transport, generally knows what theyre doing and they always do it in their own way... Ayre continues to stay away from the fringe and push the envelope of whats possible in design and execution.This example of the remarkable DX-5 is certainly the best weve ever seen come up for sale (there may have been others, Ive just not seen them) It belonged to a dear friend and client and I was involved in the setup, so I can attest to the way its been used and the fact that it has never moved since I set it up.
