This listing is for a PlayStation that has been restored and modified to make an excellent CD player. This model is the SCPH-1001, the original US release. Due to the use of an AKM DAC for sound processing, It has very good sonic characteristics and a clean sound almost three decades after its release. Later models lost the high-quality DAC and the clean sound of the original. This unit, like the vast majority of first generation units, was made in Japan. MODDING PROCESS: As can be seen in the close up picture of the mainboard, the audio signal from the AKM DAC now bypasses the capacitors that were previously in the audio section of the board, as well as the op-amps that are on the underside of the board. The goal with this mod is to remove as many components as possible from the audio path to make it as clean as possible. In place of the stock capacitors and op-amps, a pair of Nichicon FG capacitors is installed, one for each channel. These help smooth out the sound a bit and also help reduce popping that can sometimes occur when the unit is switched on and off. The disc lid detection switch that only allows the console to read a disc when the lid is closed has been removed and the contacts bridged so the console always reads the lid as closed. All connection points on the mainboard that make contact with the RF shielding have been de-soldered and re-soldered. All soldering on this console was done with high quality Cardas Quad Eutectic Silver Solder.CLEANING PROCESS:All units are 100% disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt. I ensure that the lid opens smoothly and consistently, and that the latching mechanism and open button, a common sticking point, function well. Units are fully disassembled, and plastic components are cleaned with a mild detergent with to remove the majority of debris and residue. Top and bottom cases and the three buttons are then retrobrited to remove the majority of the yellowing that is common on ABS cases from consoles and electronics of this era. The retrobriting process involves exposing the shell to UV light while it is submerged in hydrogen peroxide. I am not sure of the chemical process that restores the plastics, but my experience with retrobriting has been exceptional. After soldering has been completed, all boards are cleaned with 99% isopropyl alcohol, including all the rear ports. 99% IPA is an excellent electronics cleaner and can remove oxidation that causes issues with sound and video quality. INCLUDES:PlayStation consolePlayStation 2 DVD player remote and corresponding adapter. While the majority of it is non-functional on the PlayStation, it does allow you to play/pause (triangular button at the bottom), stop (rectangular button at the bottom), next track (R1), previous track (L2), fast forward (R2), and rewind (L2). When you power on the PlayStation with an audio CD inserted, it reads it and then goes to the CD player automatically, so all you need to do after it boots is to press start on the remote. No display is required if you dont want to use one.Power cord NOTES:The removal of the lid detection switch can cause issues with playback when switching CDs. If the console fails to read a CD when play is pressed after swapping, simply press the reset button on the console and let the console reload with the new CD. You are about to bid on a PrimaLuna Evo 100 Tube Poweramplifier. This was purchased by me new from a local dealer. The power tubes are EL34 with 12AU7 and 12AX7 tubes in the front end. You can also run KT88 and other tubes as this amplifier will automatically bias to some degree. The manufacturer lists specifications on their website. I’ve used this power amplifier in a system with Tannoy Cheviots. The sound is superb. Very full. Tannoy loudspeakers are quite efficient but I don’t detect any hum or hiss. It’s almost solid state with the holographic qualities of tubes. My preamplifier is a Shiit Freya Plus. I’ve run the 6SN7 tubes and solid state, so called LSST tubes on that preamp with success in this system. I estimate something around 500 or less total hours of listening. I also run a solid state amp and find myself running that more often. This is basically a brand new piece. I have reconfigured my room and need to use only balanced connections. This power amplifier is only single ended so it must go. That isn’t a limitation if your preamplifier source will be reasonably close by. This needs a new home and could be a big score for your system. I’m not in the professional sales game so I can’t take returns at this time. Study this carefully before buying. The Genesis 400 is a dipolar design which radiates sound from both the front and the back. This kind of loudspeaker has many advantages over a conventional type, the most important of which are ease of room placement and an open and musically accurate soundstage presentation. The Genesis 400 is finished in a beautiful rosewood veneer. There are five drivers in each of the 400's consisting of two ribbon tweeters, one three inch midrange dome and two eight inch metal cone woofers. Each driver in this three way loudspeaker system has been designed to be a perfect piston within its useable frequency band. The tweeter, described by many reviewers in both the American and foreign press as possibly the world's best, is a one inch planar ribbon design. It is hand-crafted from an extremely thin laminated membrane of aluminum and Kapton and measures a mere 0.0005 inch thick. The advantage of incorporating such an extremely thin membrane is its inherent low mass. The result of this design is a driver that has the speed of the best ribbon/electrostatic designs without the high distortion and poor dispersion that is typically associated with them. The three inch midrange dome on the Genesis 400 is constructed from an amalgam of titanium and silicon carbide. This strong and lightweight design eliminates breakup modes through the entire middle frequency range and provides tremendous dispersion and dynamic range while maintaining its coherent musical quality. The bass of the Genesis 400 is clean and powerful. It is produced by two eight inch metal cone woofers. By incorporating a stiff, machined, twin layer aluminum cone into our woofers, the problem of wobble, cone bending and non linear distortions associated with cones not possessing the stiffness of aluminum has been eliminated. Our aluminum cones are a magnitude stiffer than any plastic cone on the market today and virtually eliminate these problems. In order to take advantage of the finest properties of each driver, a sophisticated fourth order Linkwitz Riley crossover is used between the tweeter and midrange. The advantage of a Linkwitz Riley network is nearly perfect phase coherence and seamless integration of drivers. To extend the 400's bass response to 30 Hz, capacitive and inductive tuning is incorporated rather than the traditional acoustic suspension or ported box design. Use of a sealed cabinet and LC tuning gives the 400 its extended and tightly controlled bass performance.
