When released, Audio Research’s SP11 was their flagship, 2-chassis preamplifier. It garnered praise for its exceptional ability to reveal musical passages with haunting realness. This is partly due to its being extremely silent in operation. This is a beautiful foundation of a hi-end vintage system. Both units were serviced and all controls cleaned by our veteran amplifier tech. The phono stage is also excellent and allows for a nice range of loading for a variety of cartridges. I particularly enjoyed this statement in a review in Stereophile, First, it must be said that the SP-11, more even than most other preamps, does not like a cold start. After 15 minutes warmup, it sounds very good. After an hour it starts to pull ahead, sonically, of any of its known competition. After two hours, it is head and shoulders better than anything I have ever heard! Audio Research SP-11 mk2 Im the second owner of this amp and must have had it about 20 years. For whatever reason, its been very little used throughout its life and it shows. It is in excellent condition. It was serviced by Dave Hunter in Nottinghamshire - who is an extremely qualified electrical engineer, and is a specialist in valve amps - both audio and guitar, and has all the ARC data. The report has been attached. I sent it for a general service as there was an issue with the mute/soft start circuit. All it needed was one low voltage capacitor changed. All the other capacitors are in perfect condition, as are the original Sovtek valves, all 6 of them. The amp is 100% original apart from the one cap change above. Most of the audio caps are REL teflon, so have huge life spans. The electrolytics are well within spec, so Dave recommended leaving as-is. Ill package both the amp and PSU in seperate boxes, both double boxed properly, and send by Parcelforce 48, tracked and signed for. It may take a day or two to get properly packed. Please let me know if you need full insurance, as that will cost a bit extra for the peace of mind. Note that this ARC is particularly noted for its excellent phono stage. Still a contender after all these years. It also has a separate gain control as well as volume attenuation which makes it quite flexible for matching to power amp of differing sensitivity. The unit is a 240V UK model, so the power outlets designed for the American market were blanked off from new. I doubt there is a better collectable example of an SP11 out there.
