It tracks complex rock basslines cleanly, as well as delivering plenty of power; and it is just as at home with large-scale orchestral works, having both authority and the ability to reveal bags of detail, while remaining smooth and easy to enjoy. Voices are full-bodied and expressive, though, and there could be a bit more air and space in the treble with atmospheric live acoustic recordings, but better that than a rough, in-your-face presentation likely to prove wearing over time. So, as in our 2010 Awards, the Arcam takes top honours for absolute sound quality. The Solo Mini is no one-trick pony – it’s a truly do-everything hi-fi system. It will play back CDs via a sleek, slot-loading player, has an integrated 25W-per-channel amplifier, AM and FM radio tuners, plus a DAB radio receiver and an alarm clock facility (for those rich enough to install one of these systems in a bedroom). On the front panel you’ll find a 3.5mm line-in input for another MP3 player, and on the rear a whole host of connections – four pairs of stereo phono inputs plus pre-outs for power amplifier connection, and a pair of proper binding posts for speaker connection – no spring clips here. Most impressive of all, though, is the box all this comes packaged in. Though quite deep (350mm), it’s all squeezed into a case half the width of a standard hi-fi component (230mm).

I have owned this since 2010, and have now bought a Solo Neo, with a few more features but a less compact form. Although notionally 25w+25 w /8ohms output, it seems no less powerful than the Neo, driving Spendor S3/5 R speakers (not included). FM and DAB reception is very good, (I am 6 miles from the BBC Rowridge transmitter), and I still prefer FM for BBC R3 broadcasts.I have never tried AM. CD output is fine, though occasionally it rejects a disc but will play when reinserted. There is a USB input but needs to have the source correctly formatted. This replaced a Quad 34/306/FM4/CD66 setup and my only regret is that the price of the Quad stuff has risen a lot since I sold it.

Arcam Solo Mini CD, Dab FM Receiver. Fully working and good condition. Very well reviewed unit, slight dint in top cover does not affect performance. Matching Muso speakers also in good condition see photos. Speakers complete with pads one logo missing. Sound quality amazingly good for such small speakers - again very well reviewed - see reviews. (no remote control but universal ones off the web work fine). Cost over £1000 new.
