I love vocals, jazz, and many styles of music but nothing does vocals like apogee speakers. I actually purchased these speakers brand new many years after they were manufactured, from it hi-fi shop going out of business in Palm Springs California. They had been in storage in their basement for years… And I put them in storage waiting for my listening room to be built. That never happened and recently I got these out and tested them for preparation to be sold. They sound immaculate… the acoustic performance seems to be perfect… physically, thee speakers are in as close to mint condition as one could imagine… But there is a small scuff on the right side of the right speaker that I just did the other day loading them into my car. Photo shown (2nd and 3rd photos, I believe). I prefer these to be a local sale … So the person can see that they’re working… And they can be put into a car safely… I do not want to ship them… but I’m reluctantly making shipping an option for US buyers. These ribbon loudspeakers are in good condition considering their age (there are a few scuffs on the rear of the speakers). They were completely rebuilt in 2013 (originally manufactured in 1987). The rebuild was undertaken by Henk van de Hoeven who was the highly regarded European collaborator of the Australian foil maker, Graeme Keet. The external crossovers are by John Oakley and the large support stands are also new. They come in a metallic blue finish and the serial number is 6424. Unfortunately they no longer have their original packaging. Collection in person is preferred but we will consider delivering to the UK mainland. Hi, up for sale is a pair of Vintage Apogee Acoustics Centaur Minor Ribbon Hybrid Floor Speakers Made In USA. These two vintage rare 1990s audiophile speakers are in very nice cosmetic and great working condition. There are only a couple of small light blemishes on the cabinet exteriors. These highly reviewed speakers feature a 26 etched ribbon tweeter and a 6 1/2 dynamic cone woofer bass. Size is 100cm height x 35cm width x 22cm depth, each speaker weighs 52 pounds. Apogee Scintilla’s - I purchased these from new in 1984. In order to drive them I also purchased a Krell KSA 100 power amplifier. You need to have a power amplifier capable of driving a 1 Ohm load. A few years ago I had them renovated and upgraded throughout by the UK representative of Apogee Acoustics (Jon) at a cost of £4000. Complete replacement of Bass, Midrange and Tweeter panels and ribbons from Graz’ Apogee Acoustics. Replacement foam cushions with material that will not dissolve or powder over the years. Complete replacement of internal crossover networks with grade A components. New nylon socks and a professional spray finish with Porsche auto paint. In order to safely transport them I have built 2 very substantial “coffins”. I have the original manuals and sales invoice. Due to size collection in person only. Price is for 2 speakers. The speakers are in working condition and sound amazing but have some cosmetic issues. One has some swelling from water on the very bottom and there is some peeling laminate for instance - see pictures for details. Amazing deal for such legendary high resolution speakers with a long Apogee tweeter that many consider to be the best tweeter ever made. One woofer had the rubber surround separating from the cone and I repaired that with speaker repair glue that I had from a previous speaker repair. They are both operating well and as mentioned sound amazing. While these speakers will benefit from quality electronics, they are not difficult to drive compared to the all ribbon Apogee speakers so they can pair well with a variety of equipment from receivers to quality separates. I am not a technician so I cant tell you if they are operating to speck but to me they sound quite amazing - the clarity of the ribbon is phenomenal. At this price, they are great as is if you dont mind the cosmetic issues or can be the starting point of a great project - I have heard some people upgrade the woofer for even better performance.
