Amplion AR-102, Antique, Tube Type Radio, Horn Speaker, 1920s, Working Condition, Old Item. At a quick glance, this appears cosmetically perfect, but if you look closer, you will see that it has been cosmetically modified at the horn to neck connection by some previous owner. The rubber gaskets deteriorate, harden, shrink on these speakers and a previous owner has used some type of rubberized filler in the place of the o-ring at the horn flare, and the flat gasket at the driver mounting point. If you are a purist, this may slow you down, however I believe its quite brilliant, because it blends in perfectly, functions perfectly, and cosmetically it is really not noticeable. Also the binding post knurled lockdown nuts are not the correct type, but what is there, works perfectly, and looks acceptable. Again if youre purist its not correct. I tapped a 6 volt battery to the binding posts and it has a distinctive click or ticking sound when the battery leads are tapped against the binding posts which means that its working, thats the simple test. 6 volts is much lower (33.3%) than the normal 9 volts used for testing in such a basic test. Okay look at the photos, I hope you can see everything you need to see, theres a scale to show the size, and there are good angles of the modification in the areas where the rubber gaskets or bushings were supposed to be. Not trying to hide anything here. Good luck to you, hope you can add this to your collection.
