  • Description

Offered for your consideration is a pair of MISSION 210mm (8 inch nominal) wide-range woofers that were removed from my Model 700S speakers, manufactured in England in 1983. The 700S was an upgraded version of the venerable “woofer above tweeter” Model 700 and used high-frequency drivers from Denmark’s esteemed Vifa to complement these woofers. They are exceptional speakers worthy of preserving.First, I should mention an important point. MISSION produced variations of the 700-series for nearly 20 years and used no less than three different-size woofers, generally smaller and smaller each model generation. If the MISSION woofers you wish to replace have a basket diameter of 210mm (8¼”) and mount at the underside of the “baffle” (go in from back of the cabinet) with four tension clips, as shown in the 700S exploded-view image directly below, you’ve found the right listing! So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these superlative MISSION mid/bass woofers are correct for your needs. These MISSION woofers are in clean, excellent condition. They have structurally perfect poly-coated paper cones and flawless voice coil dustcaps, aside from a bit of dust imbedded in the tacky cones’ surface from the years. Plus, the anodized steel baskets are also in great shape with no scratches, dings, or rust and the large ceramic-ferrite magnet structure has no chips or oxidation. Also, I’ve left several inches of +/- input wires soldered to the terminals for the new owner’s convenience in retrofitting to their speakers. It must be noted that the positive terminal (red marking) is on the right terminal on one woofer, the left on the other (which I verified as accurate). And, most importantly, the aged original polyurethane foam surrounds were just replaced with the correct inverted-roll polyether surrounds. Many speaker companies, domestic and foreign used foam for their woofer surrounds from the early 1970’s through 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception; the surrounds were a cracked, gooey/sticky mess. And, as I’m sure most know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time. As such, surround replacement is critical for correct function. Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I carefully removed the unusual cork flange gaskets without breaking them. Then, I thoroughly cleaned the basket flanges and cone edges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do properly, and then glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Next, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. Lastly, I reaffixed the flange gaskets. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern foam surrounds! Naturally, the woofers were fully tested after the new surrounds were installed and sound terrific—very strong and clear with ample bass, fast, detailed midrange, and remarkable upper frequency coverage; they’re very close to being full-range drivers! And, I tested their DC resistance at a well-matched 5.9 and 6.0?, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 8¼” in diameter, they stand 4” tall to top of cork gasket, and the mount holes (beneath the gaskets) are spaced 5½” adjacent / 7¾” on the diagonal apart, c-t-c (if considering these woofers for a different version of the MISSION 700, etc.). So, if your MISSION 700S speakers have been sitting idle because the woofers have rotted surrounds, your cherished speakers will be back in action sounding their best in no time!As pictured and described, this splendid, hard-to-find pair of MISSION 210mm woofers with painstakingly restored surrounds is offered at a competitive price. Terms of Sale:I encourage interested parties to ask any questions they may have about this listing before committing to purchase. Payment is due at checkout by PayPal or other accepted methods. These are heavy for 8 woofers, so U.S. mailing addresses will pay $18.95 for very carefully packed shipping via U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, or UPS with tracking and delivery confirmation. International purchases accepted only from those who are able to pay with PayPal including shipping by U.S. Postal Service Global Priority Air Mail. Thanks for looking!*The woofers will be packaged face-to-face, with a piece of cardboard between them, and wrapped with bubble sheets and other protective materials before being placed in a sturdy box. I can’t wire the woofers face-to-face in the usual manner since the mount holes are covered by the gaskets, but the cones, surrounds, and terminals will be fully protected for no disappointments. Just unwrap them carefully from the stacked pair since they won’t be connected to each other. *the cabinet label photo is presented only for donor model reference

This Vifa tweeter is in clean, excellent condition. It has a perfect soft dome just below the textured plastic faceplate. Plus, that sturdy faceplate has no scratches or cracks at the mount holes. Also, the +/- terminals are marked for polarity and have never been soldered on the spades. Overall, no flaws were noted whatsoever. More importantly, its been fully tested and sounds terrific—strong, with clear high frequency output to a sparkly 20kHz rating. Plus, I tested DC resistance at 6.3-6.5?, right in line with a nominal 8 ohm rating. Lastly, the faceplate measures 3?” across, it stands ¾” tall, and the three mounting holes are 2?” apart, center-to-center.As pictured and described, this superb Vifa 19mm dome tweeter is offered at a competitive price.
