Vintage Sony HMP-20 Receiver With Record Player Please Note - Turntable is NOT working, it makes a mechanical noise when you move the stylus but the platter doesnt spin. I couldnt remove the platter so dont know if the belt needs replacing. Apart from the record player everything else works and sounds good. Good used condition with minor age related marks. No speakers

This is a Sony HMP-20 music centre from the early 1970s consisting of a turntable, tuner and amplifier. I have started to restore this. I removed all of the hardened grease from the turntable mechanism, cleaned the motor switch and stripped, cleaned and oiled the previously frozen motor which now runs beautifully. I have checked over the amp including the capacitors and all appears well, I have cleaned the controls and the amp works fine through speakers and headphones as does the tuner on both bands. It needs some further work on the turntable. There is no stylus (a replacement is £5 online) and the idler wheel needs resurfacing with a fine-grit sandpaper or treating with a chemical like Rubber Renew to restore its grip, as it currently does not drive the platter. Alternatively you could replace it with a BSR idler, readily available. The unit also needs some cosmetic work. There are some scratches in the wood effect vinyl on top (see picture) and a small chip in the veneer on 1 side at the back. The dust cover has some scratches but a headlight restoration kit would take them out Im sure. Other than that its in nice shape. The original rubber mat is present and in good condition, as are all the knobs, turntable transit screws etc. Im afraid I dont have the original speakers. All in all it needs some work, but it would make a nice project and is well worth restoring. I would do it myself, but I have to be realistic in the time I spend on projects vs the reward at the end, as I ultimately sell off a lot of the stuff I fix.
