Early Stereo Pionner Receiver with dual tuners and dual magic eye tubes. This is a very rare amplifier that I’ve had difficulty finding much info or comparable prices on. All I know is the value is in the uniqueness of the dual tuners and the vacuum tubes in the unit (some of which I’ve replaced recently when getting the unit rebiased). While new tubes fixed some of the issues there are still quite a few things wrong with it as there’s a bad crackle that emerges on the right channel on all inputs but the phono stage in particular. This means that there’s a lot of capacitors that need to be changed out before you get clean and consistent distortion free audio again. I don’t have the time or budget for that project right now so I’m parting ways with it. For those that are curious as to why there are two tuners: this is because in the early 60’s when this unit was made, stereo broadcasts were just coming out but they had yet to figure out how to send the information for both the left and right channels of audio on one stations broadcast. In order to get both sides of the music one would change the left tuner to the left channel’s radio station and the right to the right channels. Within a year or two of this unit being built they figured out how to do it on a single station so the dual tuners became obsolete. This unit also has a niche center channel out port for hooking up a secondary mono amplifier for 3 channel stereo sometimes called the phantom channel. Sinatra had a 3 channel system at one point but that fad came and went. That being said I have been able to use that output as a sub out. Hooking up a powered subwoofer works quite seamlessly with that output. The unit does NOT function like it should and requires a full restoration involving replacement of all the capacitors to be used as a daily driver. One of the tubes is very clearly red plating even though I replaced it with a good one less than a few months ago. The metal top case is bent in the rear to accommodate an oversized rectifier tube that the previous owner put in the unit. The rectifiers values are comparable with the unit however the size of the tube itself is too large to fit in the cabinet without that bulge in the top.
