Marantz SD-63 is a stereo cassette deck with Dolby B/C and HX-Pro noise reduction it was first sold by Marantz with a list price of USD $400. Condition: Gently Used The main features of the Marantz SD-63 are: 3 heads and off-tape monitoring digital tape counter with 4 digits and memory stop automatic tape type selection and capable of handling normal chrome and metal tapes belt driven single-capstan transport. Typical front loading cassette deck with the cassette compartiment located on the left side of the deck. Tape eject is operated mechanically and the cassette needs to be placed with the side to be played facing forward in the cassette well. Level meters used on the SD-63 are generic digital peak reading meters. Full-logic transport controls used on the SD-63 let it respond to the slightest finger contact for fast and effortless transport function selection. Dolby C-type used in the SD-63 provides 20 dB of noise reduction above about 1000 Hz fully doubling the amount given by B-type. The Dolby HX PRO system provides precise bias control during recording to reduce distortion and improve linearity in the high-frequency range the result is recorded sound that is highly faithful to the original. The 19kHz multiplex pilot slgnal present in FM stereo broadcasts can cause false triggering of the noise reduction system. The switchable MPX filter of the SD-63 filters out the pilot signal and assuring proper Dolby processing of FM stereo programs. For undisturbed listening a jack connector for a pair of stereo headphones is supplied. Connection to other audio components for plaback can be achieved by a RCA cable and recording from a source by a RCA cable. All main transport commands can be issued remotely with a wireless remote control.

The Marantz cd63 & all variants special edition KI signature cd67 are nice sounding players they were tuned that way but details & dynamics are a bit veiled & muted however there is untapped potential in the dac which is quite good the main problem is too much noise & jitter in the circuits refer to RAYS AUDIO PAGE & TNT AUDIO for information on upgrading these units. I have replaced several capacitors with low impedance types:-Panasonic FCPanasonic FKRubycon ZLH/ZLGStandard diodes for digital & analogue replaced with SR1100 schottky Resistors feeding ICs replaced with chokesNJM2114D op-amps replaced with ultra low distortion LME49720 HDAM output buffer bypassed as the new op amps have lower output impedanceOutput coupling capacitors replaced with 100volt bipolar types Output filter adjusted closer to Bessell characteristic this is a smoother more natural sound 5 volt regulator replaced with LM340T5Clock Bounce problem fixedStandard Ceramic bypass caps increased & upgraded to Multi Layer CeramicHeadphone circuit removedMuting transistors removed this can produce noise if skipping forwarding etc but we are trying to max out sound quality! These upgrades really open up the sound of these players improving micro details dynamics & bass you are getting hi end sound on a beer budget of course it could be taken further with low jitter clock super regs etc but this is the biggest bang for your buck!
