Denon DVD-5000, useable as DAC only, Burr Brown 1704 DACs, doesnt play discs

  • Description

DENON DVD-5000 featuring Burr Brown PCM1704 R2R DACs. AC cord included. No Remote or other accessories (see my other auctions). This unit does not play discs! (It does not recognize them at all. After the drawer closes with a disc, the message NO DISC appears.) It works perfectly as a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), with Coax or Optical (Toslink) SPDIF digital inputs selectable by a rotary switch on the front panel. It accepts digital signals from CD quality at 44.1kHz and 16 bits up to High Resolution at 96kHz and 24 bits. It works great connected to any CD transport or any disc player with coax or optical digital outputs. That is what most people do with DVD-5000s now, because they had now unobtainable DAC chips, Burr Brown PCM 1704 which are alone worth my starting bid. You are unlikely to find PCM 1704 chips in anything else selling at this price. It sounds great!!! Physically this unit looks excellent. All buttons and labels are perfect. The anodized front panel finish has the solid factory color with hardly any sign of age or use, even in bright light. It is so mirror black it seems to glow, reminiscent of the black lacquer on a concert piano, reflecting everything around it. The display is shiny too . There are a few small nicks on the top facet of the thick faceplate, most are so tiny they are hard to see except with a spotlight, but one fronts a few tiny scratches visible in the photo showing the top. I have included a closeup. The top has a number of rubs barely visible in dim light. Otherwise, no scratches and all the lettering is perfect. Of the two I am selling, this is the one I would choose, because of the gleaming front faceplate. Connected to my massive and grounded PD-75 transport via optical digital, I get better S/N than from my personal reference player for HDCD, a DENON DVD-9000 disk player (which also has dual differential PCM 1704s). I have noticed this before, the DVD-5000 is about 2dB quieter than DVD-9000, possibly because the DVD-5000 is simpler. Connected via coax digital, I didnt notice any problem by listening, but measurement showed a tiny bit of hum had entered at about -87dB. (Note: if your transport, disc player, or streamer has an AC ground, it is often best to use the optical input to avoid ground loops, because this DENON DVD-5000 is also grounded. If you use coax to connect to another grounded unit, it is possible a small amount of hum will result. Otherwise, the coax may be better. The DENON DVD-5000 does not accept USB or HDMI inputs, only Coax or Optical SPDIF.) It automatically detects HDCD bitstreams and does HDCD decoding, restoring the intended dynamic range, which is often incredible. Many players and DACs nowadays do not have HDCD decoding any more. One of the pictures shows it decoding an HDCD playing in the CD player next to it. Any kind of digital processing or volume change in the CD player or other digital source will defeat HDCD. When a digital input is selected, the display will show the sampling rate (44, 48, 88, or 96 kHz). The HDCD light will light up if HDCD is detected and is being decoded, otherwise the AL24 light will light up, indicating Denons AL24 digital processing is being applied. I guarantee DAC operation only with a 14 day return privilege. Manuals of all kinds including service manual are available for free download (sometimes requiring email registration) at various user supported sites online. I am selling an original DENON DVD-5000 owners manual in a separate listing and will accept a $25 offer from anyone who buys a DVD-5000 from me. See my other related auctions for accessories. I am listing 2 DENON DVD-5000s including this one, two RC-540 factory remotes, and one DVD-5000 factory shipping box. I will prioritize combination offers on multiple items which have no bids or confirmed sales. I will accept a $25 offer on the factory box from someone who has already purchased a DVD-5000 from me. If the factory box is not purchased at the same time, I will ship in a brand new double walled box with 2 inch foam padding. Foam padding is expensive. I will refund $40 for local pickup of the DVD-5000 because of money and time saved on packaging. The main interest in this unit now is the superior audio reproduction because of using 4 Burr Brown PCM1704 DAC chips in their best dual differential mode. Many believe this player has some of the best sound even now. The 1704 was Burr Browns last and best R2R (Resistor-to-Resistor) DAC chip. Laser trimmed resistor ladders in these chips directly provide 24 bit resolution. After this Denon was made, the PCM 1704 continued to be used in very high end audio products including Mark Levinson, Wadia, and Esoteric for another decade. The PCM1704 was the end of the road for R2R technology in major manufacturer silicon chips. Burr Brown fully discontinued it in 2012 after many years of warnings not to use it in new designs. It was just too expensive to make for the low volume demanded. Now nearly all new converters use Sigma Delta technology, which is built upon a mere 3-7 bits of actual resistor conversion with feedback. It was quite a while before Sigma Delta converters were even as quiet as the PCM 1704. Many people believe R2R fundamentally sounds better than Sigma Delta (and that was why I myself bought this player in 2014). This player cost $2500 new in 1998. Audio specs are still impressive today, including 118dB Signal to Noise Ratio, and 0.0015% distortion. It also features Denons highly regarded AL24 digital processing which converts everything to 24 bits of resolution with cleaner impulse response, integrated with HDCD processing using a PMI 100 digital filter chip from Pacific Microsonics. Some of the best recordings ever were made in HDCD and it is worth having an HDCD compatible DAC to decode them. Denon had one of the best sounding HDCD implementations ever, especially because of the PCM1704 DAC chips. It is very heavy (36 pounds) because of engineered resonance suppression measures. It feels solid and highly damped. There is no digital video output, and no surround outputs. That makes this even better for just stereo audio output. There is a second set of audio outputs whose level can be adjusted by a knob on the front panel. Serial # begins with 906 and manufactured June 1999. More information from the Denon DVD-5000 brochure: ? Vibration-resistant Construction The DVD-5000 protects the DVD and the transport mechanism from unwanted vibrations using a centrally located holder with low center of gravity firmly secured with mechanism brackets to the unit’s highly rigid, copper-plated chassis. This mechanism is further isolated from the digital, video and audio circuits which have each been mounted on their own copper-plated board so that the circuits can be thoroughly protected from mutual interference and vibrations. The overall chassis of the DVD-5000 is constructed of a15mm thick aluminum front panel, a double-layered top cover and a quadruple-layered bottom chassis assembly. All these parts have been secured with vibration-absorbent sintered alloy insulators to produce a construction that is totally protected from both internal and external vibrations. ? Parts Strictly Selected for Sound Quality Three separate transformers have been employed for the audio, video, and control sections. Transformers specially constructed with vibration resistant materials are used in the audio and video sections. In addition, the same strictly-selected parts whose performance has proven to be reliable during the development of Denon’s S1 series of audio components -- such as the removable ultra-thick AC power cord; very low ESR electrolytic capacitors, film capacitors and carbon resistors designed for high sound quality; and the high speed operational amplifiers selected for highest sound quality -- have gone into the DVD-5000.

DENON DVD-5000 featuring Burr Brown PCM1704 R2R DACs. AC cord included. No Remote or other accessories (see my other auctions). This unit does not play discs! The function would still work, if disc playing were useable at all. There are some barely visible scuffs on the top panel. The anodized aluminum front panel looks perfect in average light but shows some very slight lightening and marks in bright direct light.

Hi, This is a fabulous, Made in Japan, Denon integrated amplifier with built in DSD capable DAC. Loads of great features. Its a very heavy unit (around 25KG) and built like a tank. Very well controlled, detailed, spacious sound. These are currently £2599 new. The condition is excellent all around. It has at some time lost its dust cover/door from optical 1 input. Co ax RCA and usb (up to DSD) inputs also to the DAC. The nice metal faced remote can also operate a Denon sacd/cd player if you have one. I have the original box, but the internal polystyrene has broken up (as seems usual with the weight of this model). COLLECTION ONLY

Welcome to my listing for my Denon DCD-520AE CD player. This stunning looking player is in exceptional condition throughout. This is a lovely sounding unit, very dynamic and expansive sounding, with a deep soundstage and never harsh. With the high end 32-bit PCM5102 Burr Brown DACs on board, this player punches well above its weight in refinement. It is solid as a rock and all functions work perfectly. It reads and navigates discs quickly and quietly and also decodes MP3 and WMA audio files. As you can see from the pictures, the CD player is in stunning condition. You wont be disappointed with the build quality or sound quality of this unit. Unfortunately, I dont have the original remote control but replacements can be found quite easily online. ~~~~ Please look at my other listings and read my feedback to understand what effort I put in to shipping top quality hifi components safely and securely. I can assure you that I will ship this Denon CD player as safely as possible. Local collection is also available and I would consider delivering this locally, within a reasonable distance. Please dont hesitate to contact me to discuss any shipping options, or any other questions you might have about this Denon unit. International shipping is also available through the eBay Global Shipping Program. Thank you for looking.

Denon AVR-X8500HA 13.2 Channel 150W Receiver - Black. Selling because I upgraded to the A1H Here is a Denon AVR-X8500HA, which was upgraded to the new HDMI 2.1 specification in November of 2021, for sale. It has the original, superior AKM4490 DACs, which aren’t available on newer units manufactured after the spring of 2021. Its condition is excellent (MINT) with no blemish on the unit. It has performed flawlessly, and was kept in a locked cabinet with forced air cooling both directly on top of the unit and through the cabinet itself. The unit was plugged into a robust, 20 AMP surge protection outlet bank from Furman Power. Additionally, I was the original purchaser and our house has no pets and is smoke-free. The unit includes all accessories and the original shipping box with the foam inserts. I’ll ship anywhere in the continental United States (buyer’s expense), and will indicate that it must be handled with care. Please note, photos 1-4 are from before the upgrade, while photos 5-16 are from after. You can see the serial number is the same from before and after the upgrade, which proves this was upgraded to HDMI 2.1 by United Radio and includes the original (superior) DACs. All sales are final and shipment will occur once the funds have been cleared. Message if interested. Buy with confidence
