Description
You will see several of these speakers for sale here on eBay. The fact that they are still available is a good indication of how extremely well built they are. You will NOT find any of these KEF Reference 102 speakers with the Gorgeous, Matched Real Wood Tiger Eye Rose Wood veneers, however. They are unique! I am clearing out my Audio Vault of priceless gems from my life of Audio Bliss. Here is why you will love these speakers:They bring you MUCH closer to the Music.Heres how:The sealed cabinet keeps the bass Tight and Punchy. Most speakers have a hole in the cabinet so the speaker will sound LOUD, but mushy!) There is also a re-enforcing rod connecting the woofer to the back of the solid cabinet for exceptional musical precision (most speakers just hang the woofer on the front of the cabinet so the sound is further muddled.)Each, individual woofer and tweeter is hand-matched (That means a sound technician personally measures and Listens to all the woofers and tweeters and personally selects the perfect pair to match each other AND the speakers in the other cabinet as well!). This pair of speakers was personally matched and mated to sound as good as humanly possible, individually AND as a mated pair. You will notice the serial numbers are designated by the identical serial number with an A and B speaker. Next, cabinetry experts personally select the fine wood veneers that most closely match, for This pair of speakers. All this exhaustive effort went into this individual pair of speakers in a factory in Kent, England; not slammed out on an automated, mechanical assembly machine in China. Finally, after these speakers were matched, mated, and clothed in matching veneers, they went through intensive listening tests to insure they are the best speakers possible. The pride of producing these wonderful speakers shines through in the MUSIC that flows through them.KEF made an equalization KUBE to punch up the bass in such a small cabinet. With the KUBE, these speakers sound like Floor Standing speakers. The KUBE was a great idea at the time because subwoofer technology had not been developed or perfected. But today, a good subwoofer does a better job than the KUBE, so it is not strictly necessary. I still have mine, but the electronics are a little sketchy, so I always use my subwoofer to enlarge the sound quite nicely. Please! Do not buy these speakers if you need the KUBE to function perfectly. I does not work perfectly. and I am not selling these speakers based on the performance of the KUBE; but on the sound of the speakers, themselves.Basically you are purchasing a Hand Made speaker, lovingly constructed by music lovers to the finest tolerances of man and machine to build a reference grade studio monitor (used by the BBC for studio monitors!) Painstakingly tested, matched, mated, clad in matching real wood veneers in England by audio experts. And yes; they sound spectacular! You wont hear the speakers; youll hear the Music!Yours for a (beautifully harmonious) SONG! On Aug-24-23 at 08:50:49 PDT, seller added the following information: Listening to the KEF 102 system, we quickly became aware of its smooth, easy sound—rarely experienced from speakers of its size, though it should be expected from speakers in its price class. The bass was not at all thin; in fact, the speakers had a tendency to sound “warm,” imparting an audible but not objectionable upper-bass boost to most voices. For the most part, however, the sound quality was as neutral as we have come to expect from KEF. The Model 102 even displayed some of the same minor colorations as the KEF 105.2 system we have used for years as our reference speaker. An A/B comparison left no doubt of the close kinship between the Model 102 and the 105.2, which sells for about three times its price. The two have virtually identical sensitivities and, at least in our room, sound so much alike that in most cases only spatial clues enabled us to distinguish between them when switching back and forth. It was not too surprising to find the Model 102 even better than the 105.2
