This former flagship reference Sony projector has a native resolution of 4096 x 2160, and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. It projects absolutely crystal clear images that will leave you shaking your head. Connectivity is easy with two HDMI ports. I have a Sony 4K Blu Ray player and the latest 4K AppleTV connected to the projector and have never had a single issue. Setup is simple. The projector has Motorized Focus, Shift and Zoom. They are directly accessed from dedicated backlit buttons on the remote control. No hunting for them deep in menus. With the brand new lamp, it looks utterly fantastic. The images have so much detail, three-dimensional depth, and richness. And the phenomenal quality of the Sony lens makes the images unbelievably sharp. Check out the photo taken with just my phone from the terrific new Netflix series, The Gentlemen. The vivid colors of the chicken costume, the deep contrast, the 4K sharpness of the costume details, and the image brightness are all terrific. Plus, it also can generate 3D images from 2D images. The synthesized effect is not perfect but its fun to play around with. Over the years, Ive had every kind of projector you can imagine: Vidikron Vision One, Sony G90 (combined with the sensational Faroudja DVP-5000), Sony Qualia, JVC DLAs, NECs, Runcos, Epsons, and Marantz DLPs. I could not believe how superior the image from this former Sony flagship projector is to all of these despite its age. It will take a minimum of a new $8K JVC DLA to beat it. There are two reasons for the Sonys competitive longevity. The first is that Sony was well known for selling its flagship projectors such as the G90, Qualia, and later this 1000ES, at a loss. They would design and manufacture them with bleeding edge technology (like full 4K resolution and the fully Dynamic Iris on this one for maximum contrast) to create the best home projector money could buy... while keeping the cost moderate so that they were more accessible to Sony fans. The second reason is the lens. The quality of this lens even to this day is hard to match. If youre a serious photographer, you know how much great lens glass costs... and the night-and-day difference it makes. The end result is a projector that is the single most satisfying piece of video equipment I have ever owned. If you enjoy playing around, you can even up the performance with a pre-owned Lumagen Radiance Pro and youll be in heaven. (The Lumagen is super low cost these days on eBay, usually just a few hundred dollars.) The Lumagen has aspect ratio control, too, so you can employ its non-linear stretch function to fill your HDTV screen and avoid the black bars above and below the image that you sometimes get. Or if you have a 2.35 screen, theres no anamorphic lens required. You can also widen a 16:9 image with the intelligent stretch mode to completely fill the screen. (FYI, the VW1000ES has a Zoom function that operates similarly, but not as well.) Just because a seller claims a Sony 4K projector only has 428 lamp hours, that doesnt necessarily mean the projector only has 428 TOTAL HOURS. It might be on its 12th lamp at 2000 hours EACH, and have 24,000 TOTAL hours, which means its about worn out. Image quality and brightness will BOTH be compromised, and you will be disappointed. i would never buy one of these with 10,000 or more TOTAL HOURS, unless the price was an absolute giveaway. But, there is a way to make every Sony 4K projector show onscreen, the TOTAL projector hours, as well as how many previous lamps and their hours. Message me, and I can send you a pic of the simple 3 step process, that you can have any seller perform, to show you the total hours. VERY IMPORTANT--You should NEVER buy one of these without knowing the TOTAL hours. A car can look almost new with a new paint job, but still have 200,000 miles. ALL other models including the XW5000, XW6000, and XW7000, use inferior plastic lenses. The XW5000,6000,7000, use a cheap plastic manual lens that leaves a lot to be desired. Heres what Sony says about the ARC-F Lens:Corner-to-corner sharpness with the ARC-F lensFor pristine image quality across the entire screen, the VPL-VW1100ES features an All-Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens. We saw a noticable difference in image quality with the projectors that had the expensive all glass ARC-F lens, compared to those that didnt. Sony started out with this lens in their flagship model, and then returned to it, for all their Top of the Line Models. If you buy a projector with a manual focus and manual zoom lens, and your projector is ceiling mounted, you will have to get your ladder out any time you want to change or correct any lens setting. Full 3D. The XW5000ES doesnt even offer 3D, and the XW6000 and XW7000, require an additional exterior emitter in order to utilize 3D. The VW1000 has the emitter built in. All you need are 3D glasses. (Not included) We have owned several Sony lamp based as well as Laser projector models, and the VW1000/VW1100 is hands down the WINNER for Lamp based, and even beats out several laser models. Remember, you only get UP TO (no guarantee) 20,000 hours laser, then you throw the projector in the trash. With lamp based, you just purchase a new lamp. 20,000 hours is roughly 2.5 years X 24/7. When we purchased our first lamp based projector, we couldnt believe that we put the first 4000 hours on it so fast! Also, once your Laser projector reaches 8000-9000 hours or more, the resell value drops ridiculously low because no one wants only half the total hours, unless the projector is offered at a giveaway price! The VPL-VW1000 NEW is still priced from $15,000- $25,000. You can go online and see for yourself. ALL the Sony compact lamp based 4K models manufactured after the VW1000, are inferior in brightness and image quality. Comes with Factory Remote with FOCUS, ZOOM, and SHIFT controls, and Power Cord. Owners Manual can be downloaded for free, on the projectorcentral website. There are 2 Tamper Stickers on the bottom of the projector that cannot be seen regardless of a table top or ceiling mount.
