The Sony TC-FX6 was Sonys top-of-the-line, two-head deck offered in 1981. The deck includes three notable features that distinguish this high quality stereo audiophile cassette deck: Dolby C: This was the first Sony deck to carry the new Dolby C circuitry, it offered a 20dB improvement in overall noise. Digital Linear Electronic Counter Display:Almost all decks up until this time came with mechanical counters. Mechanical counters were less than precise, because they depended on the rpms of the tape spindles, which varied with the amount of tape on each reel. This one is accurate, compensating for different tape spindle speeds, and is easy to reset. Counter Memory Function with AMS Sensor:In addition to its precise counting, the counter also has a memory function and combined with the Automatic Music Sensor (AMS), allows a one-touch find-and-play operation. By pressing the Rewind/Fast Forward and Play buttons at the same time, the tape will advance/reverse until the beginning of a song, then automatically start playing once the tape has arrived at the beginning of the music selection. The memory function allows marking a position, with an automatic return (or advance) to a specified location on the tape, where playback begins automatically. All of the above improvements allowed a vastly improved listening experience by reducing the disadvantages of searching and selecting with tape. The Dolby C allowed the absolute most advanced performance at the time. Tape TypesSony is the only cassette deck manufacturer, of which I am aware, whose decks were set up to use 4 different tape types.*Type I - Ferric Oxide, Low Bias, High EqualizationType II - Chromium Dioxide, High Bias, Low EqualizationType III - FerriChrome, High Bias, High EqualizationType IV - Metal, High Bias, Low Equalization * Of these, only Sony offered (and manufactured) Type III tape and capability. Besides the features mentioned above, the deck also includes the following:Dolby B (or Dolby C)MPX Filter (to filter out FM carrier band signal)Sliding, individual Left and Right Channel recording level adjustmentLED Peak and Averaging recording level indicationIndividual Left and Right microphone jacks (a feature that quickly disappeared in most cassette tape decks after this period)Separate headphone amplifier circuit with jack and individual volume control.With a separately attached timer (not included), there is a power control button to allow timed, power-on recording.Supplied with this purchase is the actual hard copy Owners Manual for the Sony TC-FX6C and a full-color brochure of Sony Cassette Decks that included the new release of the TC-FX6C.
