This 1960s Sony reel to reel takes up to 7” spools (not included) and runs at 7-12” & 3-3/4”ips (19 & 9.5cm/s). It has the unusual design feature of including both valve/tube components and transistors in its circuit structure. As seen in the photos, it’s had good use and shows signs of age wear, but it has certainly not been abused. The recorder lights up, takes a little time to warm up (the left channel produces audio before the right channel’s valves are up and running), all functions are working, though the motor is quite noisy and could likely improve with a proper strip down and lubrication. Replay through the pair of speakers that clip together to form the lid is quite pleasingly full. Outputs to these are from 3.5mm jack sockets, with a switchable function to line level output from the same pair. There are similar jack inputs for mics, plus a pair of phono inputs and a 5 pin D.I.N. in-out socket. Mains voltage is adjustable on the base, though it’s worth pointing out that the mains frequency here on this model is 50Hz, so suitable for UK mains. As seen in the photos, the small aluminium fascia plate from the top of the head cover is missing, as are the aluminium escutcheons from the right channel volume & tone knobs. The grill of the left channel speaker (as viewed when the case is closed and the speakers are facing towards the viewer, has a small bend at the top l/h corner - see photo - which looks as though it’s been caused by heat at some point. I tried a sample recording using the AUX phono inputs. Both meters registered level and both channels erased and recorded, however the signal on the left side was low level and weak in quality. The right channel wasn’t exactly great hi-fi either, but for an unserviced machine from 50-odd years ago, I’m encouraged to find it’s all going, at least after a fashion - even the tape counter is working! Quite clearly I can offer no guarantees on a piece of audio recording history like this, but it’s a very neat little machine that could use a new home.
