This is a nice example of the Sony PS-X800 linear tracking turntable. It uses the last (and most refined) version of Sonys ‘Biotracer’ linear tracking tonearm, which was a marvel of engineering when ‘computer control’ were the buzzwords of the day. The arm uses brushless motors for arm movement (both horizontal and vertical) and several magnetic sensors, which facilitate the linear tracking and also electronic stylus force. The turntable balances the arm electronically, and you set the tracking force with the tracking force dial. It is then applied and maintained, regardless of record warps (even major ones) or the thickness of the record. Naturally it is fully automated but can also be controlled manually. This particular unit has been fitted with a new set of tonearm control belts and a new tonearm illumination lamp of the correct type, which was particularly difficult to source. Many of the lamps sold as supposedly compatible replacements are the wrong voltage (so burn out quickly) or are physically incompatible. I will include a brand new spare lamp of the exact type with the turntable, along with some additional replacements which will work in a pinch. The photosensors for record size detection have been cleaned. Regrettably I havent been entirely successful in getting this one fully operational, though it does function to a degree. The electronic balancing and downforce seems to work perfectly, and when it is playing a record it tracks beautifully and sounds fantastic. The speed is dead on on both 33.3 and 45RPM. For some reason the automatic function drops the arm too far in, missing the first few grooves of a 12 inch record. Oddly it has tended to work perfectly with 7 inch discs. I have also found the control panel buttons to be a bit temperamental and strongly suspect they just need cleaning. In light of the issue with the automatic functions above I have not done this. Ive also noticed that the arm sometimes moves slowly and misbehaves when it is traversing and not playing a record (it behaves perfectly on the disc). There is talk online of a particular blue wire which can cause this behaviour if it gets pinched or trapped, though looking in the arm mechanism there isnt anything obviously wrong with any of the wires. Having already gotten one of these to work, and having spent more hours than I would like on this one getting it calibrated to the point it is now, I am giving up. Im confident the outstanding issues are minor ones, and nothing that cant be fully resolved. But when you spend too long agonising over something, you reach a point where youre never likely to find the solution even if its staring you in the face. The turntable may benefit from a fresh set of adjustment pots as the pots Sony used arent the best quality. You could also try giving the adjustment pots a good clean and recalibrating. Cleaning those front switches would help Im sure. The mechanics all seem to be in perfect order and the turntable is in excellent condition, so well worth getting it going. The only other point to mention is that 1 of the hinge mounts on the lid was broken so has been re-glued. This is quite common on these as the spring pressure is immense. It was repaired with Epoxy, it is stable and doesnt affect the cosmetics. A small crack in the other hinge mount was also repaired. These are both on the lid itself, which is easily replaced if you want a perfect one. The turntable comes with its original headshell and cartridge mount (quite valuable on their own) and it also comes with the additional counterweight, which is often missing. There is no cartridge / stylus included, it takes any standard 1/2in phono cartridge though it can be quite picky about the weight of the headshell and cartridge, see the instruction manuals available online for details. Physically there are a couple of extremely minor blemishes here and there, but it’s one of the best examples I’ve ever come across. Sony Ps-x800 computer controllered fully automatic sterio turntable system. Found in house clearance I have plugged it in and it does light up but I think It needs connecting to a computer. So can test 100% so sold as seen untested. I’m very good condition, there’s a small crack in the one hinge pocket but doesn’t effect the hinge working at all. Collection only, cash on collection. This is a nice example of the Sony PS-X800 linear tracking turntable. It uses the last (and most refined) version of Sonys ‘Biotracer’ linear tracking tonearm, which was a marvel of engineering when ‘computer control’ were the buzzwords of the day. The arm uses brushless motors for arm movement (both horizontal and vertical) and several magnetic sensors, which facilitate the linear tracking and also electronic stylus force. The turntable balances the arm electronically, and you set the tracking force with the tracking force dial. It is then applied and maintained, regardless of record warps (even major ones) or the thickness of the record. Naturally it is fully automated but can also be controlled manually. This particular unit has been serviced to include a new set of tonearm control belts and a new tonearm illumination lamp of the correct type, which was particularly difficult to source. Many of the lamps sold as supposedly compatible replacements are the wrong voltage (so burn out quickly) or are physically incompatible. I will include a brand new spare lamp with the turntable. The photosensors for record size detection have been cleaned, the electronics checked and any capacitors replaced as necessary and the calibration procedure carried out according to the service manual. The turntable seems to work well, though I have had issues getting it to autodetect some coloured records which have to be played manually. If you have a record that starts very close to the edge, the arm might miss the first groove. Records that have a lead in area, as the majority of them do, don’t have an issue, and I’m confident that these are just quirks of these turntables in general but I mention them anyway for the sake of honesty and transparency. All lights and buttons work fine, the speed is dead on on both 33.3 and 45RPM. The turntable comes with its original headshell and cartridge mount (quite valuable on their own) and it also comes with the additional counterweight, which is often missing. There is no cartridge / stylus included, it takes any standard 1/2in phono cartridge though it can be quite picky about the weight of the headshell and cartridge, see the instruction manuals available online for details. Physically there are a few scuffs on the dust cover that would probably polish out, and a couple of extremely minor marks here and there, but it’s one of the best examples I’ve ever come across. Auto detection on coloured records - this doesnt even work properly on the not really black but actually dark red records - like Early Elton John stuff, and they wont be size detected on any of my PS-X machines - fully working ones included. Thats 100% normal and to be expected - because the light just shines through and confuses the machine. He suggests using manual for clear, coloured or not totally black records and that this is normal. From what youve described there, Id say that TT is fully working like it should - thanks to your fettling.

Sony Ps-x800 computer controllered fully automatic sterio turntable system. Found in house clearance I have plugged it in and it does light up but I think It needs connecting to a computer. So can test 100% so sold as seen untested. I’m very good condition, there’s a small crack in the one hinge pocket but doesn’t effect the hinge working at all. Collection only, cash on collection.
