Im not sure what the reason is, maybe it can be repaired. The radio it self works very good, with lovely sound as you would expect from Sony. SONY ICF SW12 World Band Receiver FM, MW & SW Radio, Silver READ ME No Alarm This was provided to us is VGC, and from our tests we found the sound to be very good, and tune in easily on all the bands, however the alarm can be set, but we couldnt hear any buzzer when it went off, but the display shows the alarm is working, and similarly we couldnt seem to see the back light working when you press the light button, and we have installed a new CR2025 battery too, so this is a minor fault with the unit, but wont stop it from being a great little portable radio.
