Garrard 301 SME 3009 Series 1 Decca MK11 1962. This has a bit of a story behind it. I bought this from a vintage clock specialist. He had acquired it in a deceased estate from people known to him in his village in Mid Wales, The turntable and tonearm were owned by the original owner from new until this summer, also I have every reason to believe the cartridge was too. It always amazes me how some equipment is trashed in a few years and other equipment is cherished and kept beautifully for 60 odd years. The gentleman that owned it bought the SME 3009 series 1 tonearm in 1959, this rings true as the 1st 300 3009s ever made had no serial number. This tonearm has no serial number. It sat in its box until 1962 when the Garrard 301 was bought when the owner returned from overseas serving in the Royal Navy. The next thing is the MK11 Decca cartridge. Designed and released around 1958. It is of note that the SME connection piece (the interface between cartridge and tonearm) is typical of that supplied with the series one in 1959. It is an SME product not Decca but made for Decca cartridges. This leads me to believe that both the tonearm and cartridge were bought at the same time. Also there was no other headshell with the turntable and I believe this Decca to be the only cartridge ever fitted. The next amazing fact is the cartridge plays perfectly at 3 grams, the stylus is clean and fresh. It makes you wonder how often it was used, my imagination has me believing it was, maybe, kept out of arms reach and just playing carols at Christmas who knows but the whole turntable is just so fresh. The paintwork is lovely, it runs silently and accurately with true speed with the control knob in the position in the photos. Take a look at the photo of the platter without the mat, its like new which is a real indicator of use and condition. The original Garrard mat had disintegrated sadly but Im supplying a quality heavy Technics rubber mat. The tonearm is unmodified and in honest condition, slight patina on the knife edge roof but otherwise lovely. It didnt have a bias arrangement which is typical of the original as the bias was an optional extra at the time. The bias weight and holder are new aftermarket bought by myself, the clip on the tonearm was made by me and gently clips into place and has left no marks. Ive added new oil to the bearing but it other than that its just like the day it was made. This is obviously a rare opportunity to own a real historical artifact in museum condition. I had toyed with the idea of buying a top of the range plinth but I havent had the heart to remove it from the hand made plinth that the turntable and tonearm have shared for over 60 years, I also think that the cream and black compliment each other, it is representative of the period. TECHNICS SL 150/SME 3009 Series 111s arm/ORTOFON 540 cartridge /QED QUNEX 1 cable. I purchased the turntable new many years ago and have updated it with an SME arm, Ortofon 540 cartridge and a QED Quinex 1 phono cable. The Ortofon 540 Mk 2, new can be purchased online for over £500 alone. There are a couple of problems: The SME tonearm has a small indent next to the arm rest with the little plastic retainer missing . Also, the bottom of the case has a couple of screws which cannot be secured tightly as the were cracked when I overtightened them when changing the QED cable. The casing however is still sturdy however with the other screws intact. The SME instruction manual is included. I cannot find the original box. I would prefer collection for obvious reasons and the buyer can test it out, but will package it well if not able to do so.

Offered is a very nicely kept SME 3012 Series II transcription arm. This has seen very little use over the years and as such is in superb shape with all original cables, headshell, counterweight, and extra bias weight. I’m including a low use Ortofon SL15 moving coil cartridge that sounds fantastic with arm. I will pack this super well for a safe transit. I have years of packing fragile high end audio components.
