  • Description

Very nice set of Von Schweikert VR4 virtual reality speakers..Cherry finish. Nice condition with only minor blemishes to the tops - no rips or torn areas to the fabric. These sound spectacular - open airy and very robust in the bass. Here is a sampling of an earlier review:The Von Schweikert Research VR-4s stand 46 high, 13.5 wide and 19.5 deep. They weigh in at about 120lbs for each side. They are tower speakers that have a separate bass module with two eight inch woofers with separate crossovers. One woofer runs from the basement up to 125Hz where it is crossed over to the midrange driver, the other woofer is rolled out when it reaches 40Hz. The separate woofer crossovers provide killer bass down to 20Hz (my in room measurement was actually flat at 20Hz when four feet from the back wall and -1dB when moved out to seven feet), by having both drivers working together at the lower frequencies without the mid bass bump that Ive heard from other two woofer systems that allow both drivers to run all the way up to the midrange crossover point. Each of the woofers is a polypropylene / epoxy resin hybrid with a separate enclosure and rear firing port within the bass module. The separate Midrange / Tweeter module sits, or I should say docks, on top of the bass module to form an elegant tower. The midrange and tweeter have separate time aligned cabinets inside the dowel supported, cloth covered module, reminiscent of the Vandersteen design. No one would ever mistake them for Vandies though, given their dimensions and two-piece configuration. The crossover circuit for the woofers is inside the woofer module, while the crossover for the midrange and tweeter is located externally on top of the midrange enclosure. This midrange enclosure looks like a long rectangular box that extends the full depth of the speaker. Internally, however, the sides are not parallel. There are baffles inside that channel the rear wave reflection away from the driver and through a labyrinth of increasingly dense absorptive material until the back wave is 100% (theoretically) absorbed by the time it reaches the rear end of the enclosure. The front tweeter is mounted on what looks like a three inch thick solid piece of wood which is curved to match perfectly the top curve of the metal tweeter baffle. There is one inch thick felt on all of the surfaces, including the underside of the wood top cap. The top cap looks to be a good eight inches above the top of the tweeter, so there shouldnt be much reflection off of it (...something that always troubled me with the Vandersteen design). Any sound waves that do head in the top caps direction should be absorbed by thick felt underlining. The midrange driver is a 5.25 woven carbon fiber model made by Audax, and is reported as having a range of 57Hz to 12kHz. The hand off to this driver begins at 125Hz and ends at 3.5kHz when it is crossed over to a Vifa aluminum dome tweeter. These crossover points are significant, because you wont hear much in the way of human voice above, or below this range. The low crossover is also very nice for bi-amping when mixing solid state and tubes (particularly single-ended tubes). Ive tried it on other speakers with higher crossover points, including my KRS that cross at 250Hz, without much success. The very different character of the tube and solid-state sound is much too obvious when the hand-off occurs in the lower midrange. There is a small rear firing tweeter mounted inside the sock at the rear of the mid/tweet module. This tweeter has its own crossover to integrate properly with the front firing tweeter. A rhodium plated toggle switch is located on the binding post cup that allows you to turn off the rear tweeter in case you have to place the speaker too close to a rear wall, or your room is too bright. A second toggle switch on the other side of the binding Local pickup only due to the extreme weight

I bought these speakers new about 12 years ago for $3995. Since then they have become highly sought after speakers, in large part because of their beautiful sound and their ability to be full range (23Kz - 20mKz) in a relatively small package. Sonically they are in excellent condition- no issues and no dents or rips on speakers. Cosmetically they are in good condition (rating of 5 out of 10) with quite a few scratches, especially on top of the speaker modules (see photos). Two 7 inch woofers, one 7 inch mid-range, one 1 inch tweeter, and one 1 inch rear firing speaker. Frequency response: 23Hz to 20kHz. 38.5” H,8”W, 20”D. Weight of each: 78lbs. Full specs can be viewed within online reviews of speakers, and the reviews are uniformly excellent. I am selling only because I am downsizing system. I have original wooden crates and packaging. This is your chance to buy a classic speaker at a bargain price. Package Deal; VR4Jrs plus Audience AU24 bi-wire speaker cables (which I am selling on EBay for $595) for $1700. Local Pick-up Only. I will meet the buyer within 200 miles of my home in Bloomington IN to transfer the speakers (minus the crates which could be shipped later) from car to car. For this service I will increase the price of speakers to $1300.

Rarely on the market a pair of special edition VR-7 Mark II Hse’s that retailed for over 20K. Kept in a smoke free a/c environment. In overall excellent condition although the veneer of the top of the right speaker has wrinkled up and to a much lesser degree on the top of the left speaker. Not sure why this happened on an otherwise extraordinary design with rock solid construction. Also some cosmetic damage to the left speaker front top corners. Have to sell due to substantial downsizing. They will be shipped in the original cartons. Review of Von Schweikert VR7-HSE speakers. Summary Points: The VR7- HSEs present a stunning presentation of musical events. They have compelling musical impact without being assaultive. They are clear but not abrasive; relaxing but never boring, resolving but not hyper-detailed. In this and in many other areas described below, they balance competing characteristics. They take a fairly long time to break in when new. I left them playing all day 5-6 days a week for a month. The speakers extract unexpectedly fine sound from lesser-quality CDs (even mono recordings) that had been edgy, thin, or compressed on previous speakers I have owned. The VR7s seem to be able to de-compress some recordings that had the sounded small, or to relax recordings that seemed to be somehow pressurized. My Motown and Rolling Stones CDs that I have found hard to listen to for years sound far more open. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds and the early Beatles CDs, even though monophonic, are riveting to hear. The speakers sound almost driverless, like a planar speaker. It is very hard to detect what driver is producing the sound. (I came to enjoy this quality with the Apogee Stages I once owned and still respect and remember fondly.) Very natural portrayal of human voices. The voices have real substance and foundation, especially in soundtrack recordings from theater, with complete clarity and, except in really poor recordings, no edginess. Very satisfying on all types of percussion; exciting and clear but not harsh. Brass is also a strong point, smooth and pure, but retaining enough strength to grab your attention. I make note of these areas because I find that many speakers fall short here. Strings are silky and have just a touch of lifelike screechiness. Nicely conveys the feeling of different musical venues, from the grandeur of an orchestra to the excitement of a rock band to the you-are-there feeling of a Broadway stage to the intimacy of a small Jazz group or chamber music group. Pulls off a delicate balancing act in all segments of the frequency spectrum. This is what I hear: Sweet highs with no tizziness or abrasion but just the right amount of bite. Glorious, natural, grain-free, absorbing midrange that has a great presence without any trace of shouting. Profound and very deep and satisfying bass, which is prominent but not overwhelming, except in some popular recordings that were meant to have souped-up bass. These are large speakers, and in my room the speakers needed to be at least 8 feet apart; and I sit 6-8 feet back from the plane of the speakers for best performance. Soundstaging is another strong point, consisting of a set of images that are at once unique to themselves but somehow connected into an integrated space. A center image does not sound like a phantom center channel, but more like a realistic entity not connected to any kind of speaker at all. Further Thoughts: The VR7s create a set of rounded, life-sized, realistic 3-D images that interact with each other to create a musical experience that draws me in to listen for much longer sessions than I had intended. Each musical component, while maintaining its individual characteristics, remains part of a whole sound that is unique to the performance. I am not saying that the speakers are imposing their own personality here, because the nature of the performance changes, from a large orchestra to a small jazz group, to a rock band or a Broadway stage. I never thought of myself as bass-obsessed, but the VR7’s bass is deep, warm, solid, and inviting. It gives foundation to thin-sounding recording. Here are some examples of how the VR7s perform on music I like. Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies carries both a strong bass line and a simultaneous line of delicate woodwinds and strings. The VR7s handle the contrasting sounds with finesse. The Stone’s Flowers Album shows the energy but smoothness of the early Stones, with Mick Jagger’s voice coming through as clear as I have ever heard. (Digression: great but ignored Stone’s song from Flowers: Out of Time, IMHO.) The flute in Monday, Monday (Mamas and the Papas, Creeque Alley double-CD) is airy and substantial at the same time. Also from this CD set, John Phillips’ Mississippi (a wonderful 1970 single, again IMHO) is a great, fast-paced track that can get smudged in lesser systems, but sounds lightening fast and crisp. The original-cast Broadway soundtrack of the Sound of Music is beautifully recorded and is an intense experience through the VR7s; the voices are incredibly realistic. Some of the tracks on this soundtrack are recorded hard-left and right. The VR7s integrate the voices very nicely. Sometimes a speaker that seems to disappear just creates a set of individual components like a set of little speakers arrayed in front of you. The VR7s do something much more complex and satisfying (to me, at least). Each individual element sounds like it has been woven into a complete musical fabric. This may be the most intriguing quality of the VR7s, and why they are so listenable and addictive. The VR7s have a beautiful appearance, like the finest woodwork. They are heavy, but very stable on my carpeted floor. While Von Schweikert recommends bi-wiring, I did not. In the words of Albert himself “ the VR series are engineered to replicate the recording microphone’s signal in reverse , allowing the original sound field to be created in your home “
