Description
Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle Stellar 1961 Radio Working Marketed by Stellar (Astra Trading Corp.). Model MM-5 7 1/8 wide, 5 1/4 high, 4 Deep, not including knobs. 5 tube AC/DC, AM only, radio. Has original volume knob. Cabinet original, except replaced foot, and slight touchup of stain. Cabinet front edge has some wear, especially bottom right corner, as can be seen in photos. Cord is original, is a little stiff, has slight damage, but is usable. Shortened about an inch, due to damage at strain relief. Schematic on rear cover replaced with copy, due to damage to original, will also include larger copy. Tubes are probably not all original, since they are from several manufacturers. I replaced one capacitor, which is across AC line, since it smoked, after operating the radio for a while. All other capacitors, and other components, appear original. The chassis had corrosion at one end. I scraped off the worst of it, and painted the area. There is still some pitting. Please see photos. Note: Two videos of this radio operating can be found with a search on youtube. Ebay didnt accept my attempt at uploading. I have owned this radio for over 40 years, and it has been packed away most of this time. I had a note with it, saying the volume was not too loud, and that is still true. It does get much louder, if you place your hand on top of cabinet. This might be a design issue with the radio, or might be some other reason. I did not test, or try replacing tubes. The speaker rattles, if the volume is high, but I thought it best to leave it original. While the radio is currently working, I cant guarantee it will continue to work. It is common for vintage radios to need capacitors replaced. Rather than replacing all the capacitors, I decided to leave as original as possible. Due to the likelihood of tubes coming loose during shipping, I think removing, and packing separately would be advisable. I marked on the schematic sheet, the order of tube placement. The other option would be to pack the radio cabinet with newspaper, to attempt to hold the tubes in place. Feel free to ask questions. Free local pickup.
