PS Audio 5.0 Stereo Preamplifier with Original external power supply acquired from the family of the original owner. This pre-amp was the nucleus of an extreme audiophile stereo system. Thoroughly tested all functions and features work as designed. This particular unit has an outboard power supply. It has the option of using it as a passive or active preamplifier with a front control to change from one to the other. I personally have never come across a pre-amp as versatile as the 5.0. One can even use it without any power if so desired. Most controls and switches (with the exception of the gain/high level) work without it plugged in. Or, if plugged in it has a couple of different gain settings such as high level 1, 2 and mono. The phono stage is excellent by any standards. All inputs and outputs have been tested and everything passes a strong signal as expected. Cosmetically, there are a few small marks here and there on the case and ding on one of the corners of the power supply case. Being critical, when tapping the top screen, it rattles a bit, but I doubt anyone who uses this preamplifier is going to play the bongos on the case. Most the PS Audio model 5.0s have this minor design flaw which has no effect on performance or appearance. As previously stated, the only real flaw is a ding on the rear top corner of the power supply which becomes invisible since its black in color. All switches/controls have been treated with De-Oxit Pro Gold, and slide controls on the back have been lubricated with non-conductive grease. Thats the story with this audiophile preamplifier. Item looks good and sound good (please see pictures). There is a minor problem with the volume control knob (does not affect audio in any way): The volume control knob it is a little hard to move manually but it moves. I suggest you use the control remote for adjusting the volume. No problem when adjusting with the remote. Everything else works flawlessly. Auction price was lowered to compensate for the minor volume control knob issue. The headphone jack is as good as my dedicated headphone amplifier. As all of my auctions no returns accepted.
