THIS IS A CD PLAYER This is the:Cary Audio 300/200 HDCD Player The CD-303/200 is a stout, handsome unit with a thick front panel of black-anodized aluminum and a beefy, epoxy-coated aluminum chassis. Even the remote control—a heavy aluminum unit with multi-function, backlit buttons—screams Quality! The coup de grace is the CD-303/200s transport mechanism, a Philips CDM12, which is good enough as is; Cary addition of a thick, machined drawer warmed this metallurgists heart. The Cary is surprising—in a good way—in its abundance of features. Cary calls it a CD transport/processor because it has digital inputs and outputs, as well as both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs. The CD-303/200 is nicely executed, particularly given its price. Its dominated by the Philips transport assembly, which is encased in a heavy steel channel bisecting the unit from front to back. On one side of the channel are the C-core transformer and two power-supply boards, one for the transport, one for the audio circuits. On the other side of the channel is the single DAC/analog output board. The above was from a review from Stereophile. I am the original owner and I can say this is an amazing sounding CD player. The sound is open, revealing and harmonically rich sounding. It features Upsampling and also has HDCD. For a player to have the license for HDCD meant that it had to be a more robust design way above that of ordinary players. So you get an added level of performance playing regular CDs. The player has just been fitted with a brand new NOS Philips VAM 1202 J Laser Assembly (This is the official laser recommended and used by Cary.) See video in the photos. I remember when the Cary 300/300 CD came out. I compared 300/200 to it and found this 300/200 to have a more dynamic lifelike presentation. So I kept this and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. Cosmetically it is in very good condition. It has a slight amount of paint rubbed off on the edge of the cover -- see photo -- and a tiny nick on the left of the front. One of Conrad Johnsons finest solid state amplifiers. Cosmetically, this unit rates as good to these eyes. There are a few blemishes on the unit but nothing too crazy as depicted in the photos. About a year ago, the main filter capacitors were replaced with Kemet 62000uf 100v units. The originals were Sprague 59000uf 75v. The bypass electrolytic capacitors were also replaced with 470uf 100v types. Quantity 2 of each. The original box is included. Sweet sounding preamp from PS Audio. Some traits are smooth sounding with good details. Leans more to analog sound. I do not want to say that it performs at the same level of devices that cost ten times higher, but it is faithful to its design and if inserted in a correct chain at its level, also from the price point of view, the enjoyment is guaranteed and will never envies systems that are more expensive. Taken by Gain Cell and sound, I forgot to say that the manufacture is good, minimal but with all the necessary. The dimensions are 8.5 x 8.5 x14.75 (WxHxD) and the weight is12,12 lb. There are three RCA unbalanced inputs, one XLR balanced output and one RCA unbalanced output that can operate at the same time, for bi-amping or for a subwoofer. There is no ON/OFF button, only on the remote control. On the front panel are a small volume switch and a button to select the line-level inputs, whose blue led lights match with the gray-silver colour of the front panel. Below the four feet are very small, minimalist like the remote control, I suggest to change them with something better. Look for it, maybe to improve an integrated amplifier of average value provided with the split preamp-power stage. Look for it to assemble a minimal system as to the cost, but not as to the sound. Look for it, also second-hand, and you will have a jewel at a discount price. Yes, I know, there are other tempting brands but, sometimes, if badly matched or badly designed – it happens – they do not perform as they could and/or would. Lastly, with the saved money, records and records, or files at will! Soon, I hope. And do not forget that a good preamplifier can give that quid that can make our systems to perform at best.-ReMusic
