Description
Up for purchase at “below-market price is a beautiful pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 40 v.4 speakers in a light cherry veneer finish. The sale also includes the hard-to-find optional J-23 metal stands ($500 value themselves). The reason that I’m offering this speaker system at a bargain price is that their are a few minor flaws. First off, the stands have a few rub marks where the finish is missing (I’ve not tried to touch them up with black paint) and the speakers are less than perfect, as well. The main issue with the speakers is that the grill frames, which were made out of thin-gauge plastic framing, are in poor condition. One grill has all but one of the mounting pegs broken off (I have some of those pegs but haven’t tried to glue them back on) and the other grill has most of the mounting pegs still attached but has two small holes in the fabric. Many people who have these speakers prefer to use them with the grills off anyway because theyre so beautiful. Anyway, they’re very attractive with the grills off, I must say. Also, concerning the speakers, both the tweeters have small indents in their dome diaphragms which of course doesn’t affect the sound but renders them cosmetically imperfect. Furthermore, one of the speaker cabinets has some rash in the back lower right corner which isn’t very noticeable, but I needed to mention it. Moving on, one of the mid-range speakers has a very tiny imperfection that’s right where the butyl rubber surround of that speaker meets the cone. The imperfection is in the cone itself and is the size of a pen point. I’ve touched it up just a bit so all you see is a very tiny white dot. I’ll show pictures of all these areas in my photos. As previously mentioned, none of these issues affect the sound negatively; they sound fantastic. Finally, one very nice thing I had done is to have the tops of both speakers refinished in a gloss piano black to match the stands. For whatever the reason, from my research, I’ve found out that in many cases the plastic tops of the speakers get “sticky” to the touch after many years. The company that did the refinishing told me that this is due to the clear overcoat that was originally used and that it somehow reacted, over time, with the plastic surface and that this reaction produces this sticky surface. The tops of the speakers now look fantastic and match the gloss black of the metal stands. This process, which involved special strippers and extra work to prepare the tops, cost more than I care to admit. By the way, these speakers were produced in approximately April, 2007. I know this by the date code on the mid-range speakers when I pulled them out of the cabinets to have the tops refinished. The reason that I’m selling them is that I went to a Definitive Technology Bi-Polar speaker system with built-in subwoofers. Please ask any and all questions via the eBay ask a question format. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE SPEAKERS & STANDS ARE FOR PICK-UP ONLY BUT IM WILLING TO QUOTE A SHIPPING PRICE IF THE BUYER MESSAGES ME, WITH THEIR ZIP CODE, FOR A FIRM SHIPPING PRICE BEFORE BUYING THE SPEAKERS. If shipped, the speakers will be boxed separately from the stands in different boxes and theyre quite heavy. Each stand weighs approximately 11 lbs. (before packaging) and each speaker weighs approximately 33 lbs. before packaging. Please use these approximate calculations, along with the size measurements (shown in the specifications area), to calculate the shipping costs. I ship by USPS via eBay shipping services. From research that Ive already done, I believe that shipping would range from approximately $200 to $350, depending on where you live. For the record, I dont pad the shipping cost; you would pay what I pay. Ill absorb the handling/packaging costs in order to keep the total price as reasonable as I can but realize that pick-up is the most cost-effective option.
