All program material with 5.1 channels or more is auto-detected and proprietary processing is applied that blends the directional and ambient surround information prior to replay through four surround speakers - two at the side and two at the back. THX Ultra2 features the following modes:THX Ultra2 Cinema: When performing 7.1-channel playback of Dolby Digital, DTS, or other 5.1-channel movie sources, THX Ultra2 Cinema analyzes the surround components to create surround back channels for optimum ambient and directional surround sound.THX MusicMode: This mode converts 5.1-channel sources to 7.1-channel playback with a virtual rear sound from the surround speakers and surround back speakers.THX Surround EX 7.1 Decoding: THX Surround EX soundtracks have an additional surround channel signal matrix encoded into the standard surround channel signals of a Dolby Digital soundtrack. When a THX Surround EX soundtrack is decoded and played through a 7.1 channel system, you will hear more detailed imaging behind you; this feature brings more depth, spacious ambience and sound localization to the home theater experience than ever before. Although THX Surround EX decoding produces the best results with soundtracks that have been recorded with THX Surround EX processing, the THX Surround EX 7.1 Decoding feature can be used, with varying results, with all 5.1 channel Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG soundtracks. THX Surround EX 7.1 playback requires a total of 4 surround speakers; one pair of surround speakers should be placed to the sides of the listening position, and the other pair of surround speakers are supposed to be placed behind the listening position. The receiver is equipped with amplification for all 4 surround speakers.WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.192kHz/24-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters: Linear PCM 192kHz/24-bit DACs are included for all channels. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.Upsampling Mode: This mode may be turned on to convert the incoming sampling frequency of a digital signal to twice the original frequency for even greater playback detail. In addition, analog signals can be processed as digital signals with 96kHz upsampling and 24-bit quantization.Construction: The steel chassis has ribbed side panels and large non-resonant feet to resist vibrations. The front panel is aluminum to enhance overall chassis rigidity and long-term durability. The receiver is made with a massive power transformer and large filter caps to ensure there is always enough power to handle the output requirements of your home theater system.Fan Cooling: The receiver is fan cooled for reliable operation at high output levels. Fan operation is temperature dependent, so fan cooling only takes place after the receiver reaches a certain temperature level. On Screen Display (OSD): An OSD can be displayed on your television for easy system setup. The OSD is sent through the Monitor1 S-video and composite video monitor outputs; the OSD is not sent through the component video output, the Monitor2 S-video output or the Monitor2 composite video monitor output. The joystick/enter button on the remote makes display navigation and setting adjustment simple and convenient.7.1 Multi-Channel Input: The receiver is equipped with a DB-25 multi-channel input for compatibility with future 5.1 and 7.1 channel decoders. An adapter cable is included to connect a 5.1 channel decoder to the DB-25 input; a separate adapter is required to connect a 7.1 channel decoder to the DB-25 multi-channel input. The DB-25 connection can accept input for left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, surround back left, surround back right and subwoofer signals. Pre-Out/Main-In Loops: The front left, front right and center channel preamp outputs are connected to left, right and center preamp inputs (Amp Ins), respectively, with U shaped metal jumpers. The jumpers may be removed to facilitate the connection of an equalizer or external amplifiers.RS 232 Input: This input can be used with a standard RS 232 cable to download software from a computer for possible future controls, communications and/or upgrades.IEEE 1394 Expansion Slot: There is an expansion slot, on the back panel of this unit, that is designated for an optional IEEE 1394 input/output card. IEEE 1394, also known as i.LINK, is a high speed digital interface that may be used for plug and play connection of digital components. Onkyo plans to make the expansion card available when the consumer electronics IEEE 1394 interface protocol is established.Zone 2 Output: This unit is equipped with stereo RCA jacks and an RCA composite video jack to send signals to a TV, receiver and/or amplifier in another room. The same or different sources may be played in the main zone and the 2nd zone; the signal sent to the 2nd zone is a 2 channel signal. When a remote infrared sensor (sold separately) is connected to the Zone 2 IR input on the back of the receiver, the included remote may be used to control the receiver from the 2nd zone. An on-screen display signal can be shown on a television connected to the zone 2 video output, for easy control of the receiver from zone 2. Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your video software. The surround modes include:Dolby DigitalDolby Digital EXDolby Pro Logic IIDTSDTS ES Discrete 6.1DTS ES Matrix 6.1DTS NEO:6DTS 96/24Theater-DimensionalMono MovieOrchestraUnpluggedStudio-MixTV LogicAll CH StereoRe-Equalization Circuitry: When the THX Cinema mode is activated, this circuitry provides a subtle high-frequency roll-off for proper playback of soundtracks in the home. This feature provides the means to easily remove excess treble response from soundtracks that were originally equalized to sound best in a large theater.Variable Subwoofer Crossover: The receiver has a variable subwoofer crossover that can be set at 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120Hz, except when using THX processing which fixes the low-pass filter at 80Hz.Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings that have been encoded with dynamic range data. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume control setting that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to Dolby Digital recordings encoded with dynamic range data without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors.Pro Logic II Music Panorama Mode: When listening to music, you can enjoy the wraparound sound effect when you adjust the Panorama Mode.Pro Logic II Music Dimension Mode: When listening to music with certain recordings, you will be able to achieve a suitable balance from all the speakers by adjusting the Dimension Mode.Pro Logic II Music Center Width Mode: The Center Width Mode allows you to adjust the position of the center image.Front Effect Feature: To preserve the presence and focus of live recordings that already contain a lot of reverb, this feature reduces the reverberation effect applied to the front channels.Front Expander Feature: This feature may be used to simulate a wider sound space between your front speakers. When this feature is turned on, the sound space is widened; the Off setting results in playback without an expansion of the sound stage width. Reflect Level Adjustment: The strength of direct sound reflection may be adjusted to suit the playback material, room acoustics and personal preferences. The reflect level may be set from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.Reverb Level Adjustment: The amount of reverberation applied to a signal may be adjusted to suit the playback material, room acoustics and personal preferences. The reverb level may be set from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.Room Size Adjustment: You may select Large, Mid-Large, Middle, Mid-Small or Small to change the virtual hall size for each surround mode.Listening Angle Adjustment: This parameter may be set to 20 degrees or 40 degrees, depending on which is closer to the angle formed by imaginary lines extended from the front left and right speakers to the central listening position.Dialog Enhance Adjustment: When dialog from the center channel is difficult to hear, this feature may be turned on to make dialog more intelligible. When the Dialog Enhance feature is on, vocal frequencies played through the center channel are boosted to make dialog easier to hear.A/V Sync: When a digital signal processor is connected to this unit, the audio and video from a DVD or LD player may not be played in perfect sync. If the audio is ahead of the video, this receiver can be set to delay the audio from 0-120ms, in 0.5ms increments, to synchronize the audio and video signals. Note: When you use the DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, or DTS Neo:6 listening modes, A/V sync and Relative Delay will not be activated.Video Output with Audio Sources: You may watch the video from one of the video sources (Video1, Video2, DVD, etc.) while listening to the audio of an audio source (5.1 multi-channel, CD, Tape, Phono). The Video Assign Setup feature allows you to assign a video source to each audio source.Professional Grade Component Video Switching: In addition to composite and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between three component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and 1 component video output; each input and output has jacks labeled Y, PB and PR. This feature allows you to connect, and switch between, high resolution video sources equipped with component video outputs.Source and Preset Naming: A name of up to 10 characters in length may be entered for each source and each radio preset.IntelliVolume Setup: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value in the range of -12dB to +12dB, in 1dB increments, for each source to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments. REMOTE CONTROL FUNCTIONS:Unified/Learning Remote with Joy Stick Button: The supplied wireless remote is a unified/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo CD, DVD, MD, and cassette players. The remote can learn up to a total of 408 commands from infrared remotes of other brands of equipment. The actual number commands the remote can learn may vary depending on the particular codes learned. A joystick button simplifies menu navigation and doubles as an enter button.Illumination: There is a LIGHT button on the remote that turns green button back lighting on/off. When the LIGHT button is pressed to turn on the illumination, the buttons remain illuminated until 5 seconds after the last button is pressed. Pressing the LIGHT button while the buttons are illuminated will turn off the illumination.Macros: Nine macros, consisting of as many as 16 button operations each, can be programmed into this remote. With the press of a single button, each macro will perform a series of up to 16 button operations in sequence.
