However, there are cases in which they can be heard. This is because beats between multiple high-frequency waveforms are converted into inaudible signals under certain conditions. This beat is a phenomenon that occurs when waveforms of multiple frequencies are synthesized, and the frequency component of the difference is generated.For example, the high-frequency waveform of a digital audio signal itself is not audible, but when those frequencies exist in close proximity, the beat phenomenon generates extra noise in the audible bandwidth. This is called intermodulation distortion, and the generation of noise that correlates with the speech signal is particularly harmful. In musical instruments, multiple tones blend together to create a beautiful harmony. However, in audio equipment, care must be taken not to create beats on its own.The signal-to-noise ratio value written in the specifications represents the residual noise level when there is no signal. Noise caused by the aforementioned beats is below the level of residual noise, so it cannot be measured by the measuring instrument. AWRAT (Advanced Wide Range Amplifier Technology)The M-5000R employs a host of proprietary Onkyo technologies to ensure optimal audio performance. 1. DIDRC (Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry)Since the advent of digital audio, signal-to-noise ratios have improved dramatically. However, the S/N ratio reflects static noise only, and takes no account of another type of noise that occurs as the byproduct of sound reproduction—dynamic noise. To reduce this type of noise, Onkyo has developed DIDRC technology for use in our hi-fi components. Despite being beyond the normal range of human hearing, frequencies above 100 kHz are susceptible to clock pulse and other forms of distortion from digital devices.
