Naim NAC-N 172 XS DAB/FM Extensive Naim servicing including new screen, tuner module and latest software update Serial Number 341*** - 2013 model Excellent condition and with all accessories About this NAC-N172XS DAB/FM This is an excellent example of the versatile Naim NAC-N 172 XS streamer/pre-amp/tuner. This exceptional example has the desirable DAB/FM tuner board fitted. It also has a fantastic service history with the crucial components recently replaced or updated by Naim. It’s in full working order, excellent cosmetic condition and is complete with all of its original accessories. The first service (Jan 2023) at Naim consisted of replacing the OLED screen (always a weakness with these products), brownout capacitor and a software update to the latest spec. As a Band 7 repair, this cost £549. The unit was then sent to Naim for a second repair (May). This time they replaced the entire tuner module and volume control. Again, this was another £549 job, making a grand total of nearly £1100 of service work having recently been carried out. With all the weak points replaced and the latest software installed, this NAC-N172 XS is now in superb working order and very possibly the best available. As you’d expect, every function works flawlessly and the display is clear and bright. As this player has the most recent software, it also has direct access to both Spotify and Tidal via the control panel (just link to your account). Cosmetically, the unit is equally impressive. There are no major marks anywhere on the player, with just a very faint line above the volume control the only very slight flaw we could find when studying closely. The display is perfect, of course, as is the illuminated Naim logo - it’s not unusual for these to ‘bleed’ but this one is perfect. About the NAC-N172 XS The NAC-N 172 XS was launched in 2012 and effectively combined Naim’s ND5 XS streamer with an analogue pre-amp based around the NAC 152 XS. The key here is flexibility, as this device suits dozens of different applications. As a pre-amp, it connects to a power amp (either Naim or other brand). It has digital and analogue inputs. Naim NAIT XS 2 stereo amp Current retail price for the XS 3 - £2499 Original box and internal packing Instruction Manual Remote Control Excellent example Serial Number 354*** - 2013 About this NAIT XS 2 This NAIT XS2 is in excellent condition and has been well-looked after. The condition is better than many much newer models I’ve seen. It’s in perfect working order with a quiet transformer and no buzzing/humming issues. The controls and sockets are all working fine and the remote control’s battery cover is securely fixed. The illuminated logo is free from ‘bleed’ - a common issue with Naim products of this age. Cosmetically the unit is in excellent condition with just a few very minor marks if you look very closely. Please see the photos to make a personal assessment of the condition. It has its original remote control (also in excellent condition), instruction manual and packaging. It even still has its pink manual and remote holder, which is usually a sign of a careful owner! Supplied with a generic power lead with UK plug. About the NAIT XS 2 The NAIT XS 2 was produced between 2013 and 2019 and, somewhat confusingly, took over from the XS-2. The hyphen is important here, as the original Naim NAIT XS (launched in 2008) had a minor upgrade in its last year - it’s this model that was labeled, on the boxes and in one literature at least, as the XS-2. In terms of it’s tech spec, the XS 2 actually has little in common with the older NAIT XS or its cheaper contemporary, the NAIT 5si. The XS 2 is, in fact, a simplified version of the SUPERNAIT 2. In essence you get the SUPERNAIT’s high purity of sound (perhaps even a little better) but with a touch less power, fewer features and the slimline XS casing. For some, it’s actually the XS 2 that’s the true descendent of the legendary NAIT 1 and NAIT 2 amps. Certainly, unless you have very difficult speakers to drive or a vast room to fill, this is very much the sweet spot in Naim’s amplifier range. It sounds a lot more dynamic and powerful than its power rating suggests (as is often the case with Naim amps), yet it also sounds more rounded and well-resolved than some of Naim’s other amps.
