Naim NAC-N 172 XS DAB/FM Extensive Naim servicing including new screen, tuner module and latest software update Serial Number 341*** - 2013 model Excellent condition and with all accessories About this NAC-N172XS DAB/FM This is an excellent example of the versatile Naim NAC-N 172 XS streamer/pre-amp/tuner. This exceptional example has the desirable DAB/FM tuner board fitted. It also has a fantastic service history with the crucial components recently replaced or updated by Naim. It’s in full working order, excellent cosmetic condition and is complete with all of its original accessories. The first service (Jan 2023) at Naim consisted of replacing the OLED screen (always a weakness with these products), brownout capacitor and a software update to the latest spec. As a Band 7 repair, this cost £549. The unit was then sent to Naim for a second repair (May). This time they replaced the entire tuner module and volume control. Again, this was another £549 job, making a grand total of nearly £1100 of service work having recently been carried out. With all the weak points replaced and the latest software installed, this NAC-N172 XS is now in superb working order and very possibly the best available. As you’d expect, every function works flawlessly and the display is clear and bright. As this player has the most recent software, it also has direct access to both Spotify and Tidal via the control panel (just link to your account). Cosmetically, the unit is equally impressive. There are no major marks anywhere on the player, with just a very faint line above the volume control the only very slight flaw we could find when studying closely. The display is perfect, of course, as is the illuminated Naim logo - it’s not unusual for these to ‘bleed’ but this one is perfect. Please see the images to make a personal appraisal of the condition. Very importantly, it comes with all its genuine Naim accessories, including the Naim remote control, genuine Naim power lead (Crabtree UK plug), quick start instructions, wi-fi aerial and full Naim packaging (including the outer slip box, inner foams and card. About the NAC-N172 XS The NAC-N 172 XS was launched in 2012 and effectively combined Naim’s ND5 XS streamer with an analogue pre-amp based around the NAC 152 XS. The key here is flexibility, as this device suits dozens of different applications. As a pre-amp, it connects to a power amp (either Naim or other brand). It has digital and analogue inputs. On top of this it also has a built in music network streamer and DAB/FM tuner. You don’t have to connect it to a power amp. The line output makes it ideal for use as a stand alone source with your existing amp or with active speakers. Or you can simply use it with a pair of headphones… Over the years we’ve meant people using this (and the 272 version) for everything from a full ‘heart of system’ pre-amp to simply using it as a top quality Naim DAB tuner! With its digital inputs and line level output, it also works as a standalone DAC, of course. Where the NAC-N 172 XS really stands apart from rivals of its time, and even today, is in the quality of its components. How many other streamers use a toroidal transformer, for example. As you can see from magazine reviews of the time the sound quality is a highlight. By the time Naim launched the NAC-N 172 XS in 2012, they already had plenty of experience of streaming audio products with the previously launched Unity (2009), NDX (2010) and ND5 XS (2011). This means that the NAC-C 172 XS came with HiRes compatibility to 24-bit/192kHz from day one - unlike the first Unity and NDX models. The player is technically very similar to the ND5 XS model and even uses the same ‘XS’ casing with anodised front panel. If you’re unfamiliar with Naim’s network players, essentially they perform a whole host of music streaming functions. Naim UnitiQute All In One Amp, Network Streamer, iRadio, DAB, FM, 24bit DAC This is the MK1 24 / 96 version of the multi award winning UnitiQute Cosmetic condition is excellent, with just a few very small marks that that I have tried to capture in the last 4 photos above. The marks are virtually invisible in normal use. Works well on all functions and sounds superb. This is the MK1 version, so no Spotify, Tidal, or Bluetooth (but Bluetooth is highly compressed, so best avoided for serious music transmission, anyway) Thi sale includes a mains cable and Naim instruction booklet, plus a cable bundle for use with UnitiQute. All cables are in as new condition - 2 x 2m 79 Strand speaker cable, with 24K gold plugs at amp end + 10m Ethernet cable + an optical cable + a digital coax cable. This sale excludes the original Naim remote, the screw on Wi-Fi aerial and the UnitiQutes original box Wi-Fi aerials can be purchased for a few pounds, but see my comments below. Naim remotes are available to buy separately, but you dont need one, because control via Naims excellent free smartphone App is more intuitive. The only main function the original Naim stick remote does that the App doesnt do is configure the UnitiQute for Wi-Fi use. However, Wi-Fi is not as good sounding or as reliable as a wired Ethernet connection, so it is best to connect the UnitiQute to your network with the cable provided in thi sale, or use Ethernet over mains, which is a good quality, reliable, inexpensive solution that uses the mains wiring in your house to carry your Ethernet information.. When it was launched, The UnitiQute won just about every award in the book, including Product Of The Year from both What Hi-Fi and Hi-Fi World. It is one of Naims highest reviewed products ever, possibly because just like the Nait (which is where the design of the Qutes amp circuitry came from) the UnitiQute captures the very essence of the Naim sound, making you want to just keep playing more and more music, which is what owning Hi-Fi is ultimately all about. I think the reviewer of the Stateside audiophile magazine American Tone summed up the UnitiQutes appeal pretty well, when he wrote Naim’s Uniti Qute will spoil you. If this is the core of a high-quality second system, you might find yourself spending less time with your main system. If it’s your first venture into high-end audio, you’re going to have to spend a lot of money, should the upgrade bug hit you some day; the Qute is that good. Naim has hit the mark perfectly for a high quality yet reasonably priced, all-encompassing HiFI component. Add your favorite pair of budget speakers and you are ready to rock for a reasonable outlay, yet it’s good enough to up the ante considerably with higher-priced peripherals before you will get tired of it. A word to the wise: anyone who gets rid of their Nait 2 rues the day. Should you buy a Qute, I suggest hanging on to it forever. Just like the legendary Nait and Nait 2 amplifiers, I’m positive the Qute will still hold a special place in many music lovers hearts years from now. I couldnt agree more, but Ive got two excellent examples of UnitiQutes and (as my wife keeps pointing out) we dont need two, so I have decided to let someone else enjoy this one. I have owned a dozen tuners over the years, and this is my favorite- its much better than anything made in Japan, and is more musically involving than any McIntosh tuner. Naim NAT 05 FM Tuner Dispatched with Other Courier services This has been fully tested and working well, there are some very light marks from use ( see photos). Comes with power lead. There is no aerial supplied with this unit.

Ive had this tuner for a long time. It came to me with its marks on the casing but Ive done my best to look after it whilst its been in my posession. I dont think Ive seen another one since. I first heard this tuner about 20 years ago and was absolutely blown away by its performance. I was amazed when I found one for sale a few months later - I had to have it. The FMT 2 does have a problem where it doesnt produce any output till after its warmed up - usually about 2 or 3 mins after being switched on. I contacted Nytech who still service Ion Systems and Nytech equipment and they said they could repair it. I havent got around to sending it to them. They also advised that issue is definitely going to be with the FMT and not the X-PAK. This hasnt bothered me that much in the past because Ive just powered it up and given it a couple of minutes to warm up. Its always been the same for years and well worth the wait, however it would be nice to have the remedial work done as its a very special piece of British Hi-fi. Apparently this tuner was known as the Naim Beater - I can see why. Local collection welcome from SS1 or I can post.

Ich habe ihn bis vor kurzem als Digitalen Zuspieler in meiner HighEnd Anlage verwendet. Habe mir jetzt von NAIM die größere Variante mit CD Player zugelegt, ansonsten hätte ich den UnitiQute reparieren lassen. Hat stets einen mega Klang geliefert, der typische NAIM Sound, sehr dynamisch mit knackigem Bass und bester Auflösung. Optisch sieht der UnitiQute aus wie neu, ich habe keine Macken erkennen können. Technisch jedoch defekt! … Zuerst lief das Display nicht mehr, welches ich noch selber austauschen wollte, was recht einfach zu machen ist. Doch beim Anschluss des neuen Verstärkers, ist irgendetwas in dem Gerät verschmort, was ich mir nicht erklären kann. Das muss an den Cinch Steckern passiert sein … weil ich in dem Moment an dem Gerät selber gar nichts getan habe, sondern an dem Verstärker, den ich ausgetauscht hatte … Vielleicht könnt ihr damit etwas anfangen? Ich hatte daraufhin das Gerät geöffnet und nichts erkennen können … siehe Bilder. Deswegen verkaufe ich den NAIM als defekt. Denke jedoch, dass lediglich ein kleines Teil kaputt gegangen sein wird und lässt sich von einem Fachmann sicherlich schnell reparieren. Ansonsten gibt’s im Netz viel über den UnitiQute viel zu lesen, super Tests von renommierten HiFi Magszinen, in testberichte.de … etc. Wünsche viel Erfolg beim Bieten!
