Pure Path highlights in ? 536 include Folded Cascodes, an extremely high bias current, and very little negative feedback.High Gain with Low Noise and Wide Bandwidth: The Folded Cascode Mark Levinson components are designed around a Pure Path amplifier circuit concept that makes heavy use of a circuit design element called a cascode. Originally created for improving the bandwidth of vacuum-tube circuits in radios, cascodes both improve bandwidth and enhance linearity. A cascode combines two transistors so that they operate as a single composite device that functions like a single transistor, using the wanted characteristics of each component transistor, and rejecting the unwanted characteristics. Mark Levinson engineers began their design of the preamp gain stage with pairs of JFETs (junction field-effect transistors) chosen for their low noise and high gain. JFETs achieve such characteristics by being large, and with their size comes nonlinear gain – or distortion. To mitigate this, BJTs (bipolar junction transistors) are added to the circuit. BJTs exhibit very low input impedance and very high output impedance, which translates to excellent bandwidth and linearity. By creating a cascode of the JFETs and BJTs, Levinson engineers created a design with the best characteristics of both sets of devices. The output of the cascode is then connected to another transistor of the opposite gender. Current flows through it in the opposite direction to turn around the direction of the signal current. This special connection is called a Folded Cascode and a hallmark of the Pure Path circuit: High gain with low noise, wide bandwidth, and excellent linearity.Best-Possible Open-Loop Performance The audio circuitry in ? 536 is optimized for the best-possible open-loop performance. As a result, very little negative feedback is necessary, and the amount employed can be adjusted to achieve certain subjective or objective results. The open-loop gain and bandwidth of the circuit are painstakingly set using precision resistors and compensation capacitors. Additional precision resistors compose the feedback network.Uncompromising Build: Military-Grade Components All Mark Levinson equipment employs electronic components carefully chosen for their specific task. Gain-stage JFET pairs have high gain, low noise, and low distortion. And since they are encapsulated in the same package, the two devices operate under nearly identical conditions. Capacitors used in critical filtering locations are film types, noted for their consistent performance regardless of temperature and frequency. Finally, resistors in critical gain-setting and feedback locations use tantalum nitride thin-film elements. Tantalum nitride typically finds use in sensitive military equipment because it is unusually stable with respect to temperature, exhibits very low noise, and is unaffected by magnetic fields. I have too many devices in my collection (Mark Levinson No36 ,No36s, No360s, No39, no390s, Spectral SDR-2000, Wadia 2000, Denon DCD-S1, etc ) so better some of them have new home where they will be used. As I have many Mark Levinsons , decided to part with some of them. All of my devices are upgraded , and this converter is no exception. Its not just parts change but carefull parts selection from previuos expierences upgrading No36 and no360s units. They were great devices 25years ago, and still sought after because very linear and musical R2R DA chips used inside, but to compete with modern DAC’s in all aspects they need some revisions with more modern/better passive parts . Sound of upgraded No36s is oposite of digital sound we used to hear- Its very smooth,analog like, just like good tape recorder. Its also very detailed DAC, without being edgy or shouty. A midrange texture have have some 3d layering common only for Mark Levinson ( Wadia and Spectral have their own strong sides, but they are less refined in high frequencies and less 3D layering of vocals or intruments) No36s features a bunch of audiophile engineering solutions. Most modern DAC can only dream about this. They made with integrated circuits and FPGA. So No36s features- 1)DISCRETE output bufer 2) DISCRETE voltage regulators for ANALOG and DAC sections. There is no integrated voltage regulators in those sections. The complexity and price is 40-50x more han use simple integrated circuits. This is very rare and can be found only in most expensive DAC. Outcome is very refined and analog like high frequencies (no sibilanse or synthetic high frequencies) but high frequencies are not atenuated - they are very airy but and at the same time organic. A rare combination. 3) In two critical places (IV conversion and bufer feedback) No36S used expensive Vishay metal bulk foil resistors. For IV section they are calibrated by hand with 0.0006% precision for least discortion. 4) As there is no DSP parts for the filter, only inteligent FIFO bufer, real measured jitter was 8ps (for example no360s have DSP and jitter is 20 times bigger) So far only Spectral SDR-2000 have same 8pS jitter. The folowing upgrades were made to the unit- 1) All capacitors in analog domainand DAC section are replaced with Elna Cerafine (60psc). Elna Cerafine was chosen because its midrange slight forward( perfectly complement closed in midrange sonic signature of stock no36s have ) and they perfectly transparent and neutral- without any colorations. Other Capacitors we have tried ( Elna Silmics, Nichicon Muse ES, KZ, Fine Gold, Panasonics FC) coloured sound in one or other way. 2)Power suply smoothing cpacitors for analog stages changed to the same type but increased capacity from 6800uf to 15 000uf each (total 60 000uf) 3) All diodes changed to MUR860. 4)Resistors which are directly in signal path also replaced with same Vishay metal bulk foil resistors. In the factory there was cost saving desision but in personal upgrade for single unit, price its irrelevant. 5)some of the cheaper MKT capacitors changed to WIMA FKP( which was too big to install from factory. With some effort It was possible to install. 6) Opamps and line drivers sockets mountened forthe sake od experiment with variuos operational amplifiers and line drivers. They change sound quite a bit. 7) ALL Dale CFM-55/RN55 brown and blue resitors changed to more transparent/neutral metal film types. Dale are smooth but they are veiled, blurred and simply eats dynamics and transparency. They may be good in soem digital amplifiers to smooth out but not in No36s. This was one of the best noticeable improovemens. 8) Digital board smoothing capacitors were replaced wit biger ones (6800uf to 22 000uf and 10 000uf ) which No360s already have from the factory. Filtering resitor changed to caddock MP930 and its dedicated heatsink ar mountened. Other capacitors(all of them) in digital board changed to Panasonic FR which have very low impedance in higher frequencies (needed for digital circuits) Upgrade parts costed 320eur and took whole 3 days to instal. PCB is 4 layer and great care and attention was needed to install all safely without damaging PCB boards . This DAC is as new now and would be good good for another 30-35years of usage. Original digital section capacitors age was specified as 1000-2000hours(at maximum temperature and voltage) before they start change its parameteters for worse. Replacements are specified for 5-10 longer working times(10 000hours) and its ESR and TAN factors are better many times than original capacitors. Of course I will include original Power cord and all old parts left from upgrade. This is now seriuos DAC which can compete with best DACs around. No36s can accept up to 24 bit and up to 48khz. When I downsample 192/96khz to 48khz and 88.2/176/4khz to 44khz no36s still outperforms new dac even they play unmodified 192khz files. Quality of sound depends not on the lastest / gratest formats, but more in recording quality and DAC reproducing abilities. I will never get back to modern DAC after hearing modified Mark Levinson, Wadia and Spectral units. Time flies and golden era dac (1991-2003) with real r2r dac chips is still best. Happy listening! Ich habe zu viele Geräte in meiner Sammlung (Mark Levinson No36, No36s, No360s, No39, No390s, Spectral SDR-2000, Wadia 2000, Denon DCD-S1 usw.), daher ist es besser, wenn einige davon ein neues Zuhause haben, in dem sie verwendet werden. Sie waren vor 25 Jahren großartige Geräte und immer noch begehrt, da im Inneren sehr lineare und musikalische R2R-DA-Chips verwendet wurden. Um jedoch in jeder Hinsicht mit modernen DACs mithalten zu können, sind einige Überarbeitungen mit moderneren/besseren passiven Teilen erforderlich. Der Klang moderner No36s ist das Gegenteil des digitalen Klangs, den wir früher hörten. Er ist sehr sanft, analog, genau wie bei einem guten Tonbandgerät. Es ist auch ein sehr detaillierter DAC, ohne nervös oder laut zu wirken. Eine Textur im Mitteltonbereich weist eine gewisse 3D-Schichtung auf, die nur bei Mark Levinson üblich ist (Wadia und Spectral haben ihre eigenen starken Seiten, sind aber bei hohen Frequenzen weniger raffiniert und weniger 3D-Schichtung bei Gesang oder Instrumenten). No36s bietet eine Reihe audiophiler technischer Lösungen. Davon können die meisten modernen DAC nur träumen. Sie verwendeten integrierte Schaltkreise und FPGA. So verfügt No36s über- 1) DISKRETER Ausgangspuffer 2) DISKRETE Spannungsregler für ANALOG- und DAC-Abschnitte. In diesen Abschnitten gibt es keine integrierten Spannungsregler. Die Komplexität und der Preis sind 40-50x höher als bei der Verwendung einfacher integrierter Schaltkreise. Dies ist sehr selten und nur in den teuersten DACs zu finden. Das Ergebnis ist sehr raffiniert und analog wie hohe Frequenzen (keine Zischlaute oder synthetischen hohen Frequenzen), 3) An zwei kritischen Stellen (IV-Umwandlung und Pufferrückkopplung) verwendete No36S teure Metallfolienwiderstände von Vishay. Für den IV-Bereich werden sie von Hand mit einer Genauigkeit von 0,0006 % kalibriert. 4) Da es keine DSP-Teile für den Filter gibt, sondern nur einen „intelligenten FIFO-Puffer“, betrug der tatsächlich gemessene Jitter 8 ps (zum Beispiel haben keine 360er DSP und der Jitter ist 20-mal größer). Bisher haben nur Spectral SDR-2000 den gleichen Jitter von 8 ps. Die folgenden Upgrades wurden an der Einheit vorgenommen: 1) Alle Kondensatoren im Analogbereich und im DAC-Bereich werden durch Elna Cerafine (60 psc) ersetzt. Elna Cerafine wurde ausgewählt, weil der Mitteltonbereich leicht nach vorne gerichtet ist (die geschlossene Klangsignatur im Mitteltonbereich der serienmäßigen Nr. 36 perfekt ergänzt) und sie vollkommen transparent und neutral sind – ohne jegliche Verfärbungen. Andere Kondensatoren, die wir ausprobiert haben (Elna Silmics, Nichicon Muse ES, KZ, Fine Gold, Panasonics FC) haben den Klang auf die eine oder andere Weise verfärbt. 2) Die Glättungskondensatoren für die Stromversorgung für analoge Stufen wurden auf den gleichen Typ geändert, die Kapazität wurde jedoch von jeweils 6.800 uf auf 15.000 uf erhöht (insgesamt 60.000 uf). 3) Alle Dioden auf MUR860 geändert. 4)Widerstände, die sich direkt im Signalpfad befinden, werden ebenfalls durch die gleichen Vishay-Metallfolienwiderstände ersetzt. In der Fabrik gab es den Entschluss, Kosten zu sparen, aber bei der persönlichen Aufrüstung einer einzelnen Einheit spielt der Preis keine Rolle. 5) Einige der günstigeren MKT-Kondensatoren wurden durch WIMA FKP ersetzt (was zu groß war, um ab Werk installiert zu werden. Mit einigem Aufwand war die Installation möglich. 6) Sockel für Operationsverstärker und Leitungstreiber, die zum Experimentieren mit verschiedenen Operationsverstärkern und Leitungstreibern angebracht sind. Sie verändern den Klang ziemlich stark. 7) ALLE braunen und blauen Dale CFM-55/RN55-Widerstände wurden durch transparentere/neutralere Metallfilmtypen ersetzt. Dale sind glatt, aber sie sind verschleiert, verschwommen und fressen einfach Dynamik und Transparenz. In manchen digitalen Verstärkern können sie gut zum Glätten geeignet sein, in No36s jedoch nicht. Dies war eine der spürbarsten Verbesserungen. 8) Die Glättungskondensatoren der Digitalplatine wurden durch größere ersetzt (6800 uf bis 22 000 uf und 10 000 uf), die die No360 bereits ab Werk haben. Der Filterwiderstand wurde durch den Caddock MP930 ersetzt und sein spezieller Kühlkörper ist montiert. Andere Kondensatoren (alle) in der Digitalplatine wurden durch Panasonic FR ersetzt, die bei höheren Frequenzen eine sehr niedrige Impedanz haben (für digitale Schaltkreise erforderlich). Upgrade-Teile kosteten 320 Euro und die Installation dauerte ganze 3 Tage. Die Leiterplatte besteht aus 4 Schichten und es war große Sorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit erforderlich, um alles sicher zu installieren, ohne die Leiterplatten zu beschädigen. Dieser DAC ist jetzt wie neu und würde noch weitere 30-35 Jahre im Einsatz sein. Das Alter der ursprünglichen Digitalkondensatoren wurde mit 1000–2000 Stunden (bei maximaler Temperatur und Spannung) angegeben, bevor sie beginnen, ihre Parameter zu verschlechtern. Ersatzkondensatoren sind für 5–10 längere Betriebszeiten (10.000 Stunden) ausgelegt und ihre ESR- und TAN-Faktoren sind um ein Vielfaches besser als bei Originalkondensatoren. Selbstverständlich werde ich das Original-Netzkabel und alle alten Teile, die vom Upgrade übrig geblieben sind, beilegen. Dies ist jetzt ein seriöser DAC, der mit den besten DACs auf dem Markt mithalten kann. Ich habe einen „neuen“ DAC von Ayre, Chord and Heggel und Less Loss. Es gibt keinen Vergleich zwischen ihnen – die Nummer 36 ist viel besser. No36s können bis zu 24 Bit und bis zu 48 kHz akzeptieren. Wenn ich 192/96 kHz auf 48 kHz und 88,2/176/4 kHz auf 44 kHz heruntersample, übertrifft der No36s immer noch den neuen DAC, selbst wenn er unveränderte 192-kHz-Dateien abspielt. Die Klangqualität hängt nicht von den neuesten/besten Formaten ab, sondern mehr von der Aufnahmequalität und der DAC-Wiedergabequalität. Ich werde nie wieder zum modernen DAC zurückkehren, nachdem ich modifizierte Mark Levinson-, Wadia- und Spectral-Geräte gehört habe. Die Zeit vergeht wie im Flug und der DAC der Goldenen Ära (1991-2003) mit echten R2R-DAC-Chips ist immer noch am besten. Viel Spaß beim Zuhören!
