The LR-5000 is a super rare unit. Its considered one of the best quads out there because it had decoders built in for pretty much all of the formats. Especially the coveted SQ-W, which usually required an external decoder. It is built into the LR-5000. This was the follow up to the LR-4000, which did not have SQ-W built in and required the external component - https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/lafayette/sq-w.shtml. The 5000 was the way to go in the mid-to-late 70s if you were looking to experience true quadrophonic sound. But dont worry, its also a pretty great 2-channel receiver as well. This one is in great condition. Sounds great and is cosmetically excellent. This sale includes the original user manual which is essential in how to correctly use all the features. This is in pretty nice condition, no dents or dings, needs a general wipe down. I tested it with my Heathkit AM tube tuner and two small Polk speakers, it sounds good, no hum. Treble & bass work. All knobs turn, none frozen. All switches work. Flaws basically cosmetically are one knob is a replacement, not original, and another knob split in half when I turned it, I taped it together, can be super glued together. I tested tuner and aux inputs and all good both sides. It looks to be all original with bottom cover removed, check pictures. I dont know why but this is missing some bolts in the bottom cover and top cover underneath, its still solid holding together. I cant tell you how many units of something like this I have sold over the years that are always missing screws, it amazes me. Anyways, 22 lbs is its weight without packaging. Measures 14 1/2 by 13 by 5 approx. Shipping is 28 lbs.

This early 1970s unit does power up with the cord and does receive a couple of AM/FM stations. I have no knowledge about the other 4 bands, so I cannot say whether they work. This is either a restoration project or a parts only situation, depending on the buyer. The Lafayette Guardian is a simple multiband receiver covering longwaves up to the maritime communications shortwave band and VHF and VHF ranges. On top of the case is the rotating ferrite antenna, which can be used as a rudimentary direction finder to detect sources of RF interference. On the front left side panel is the speaker grill (speaker works) with the small red button for the dial illumination (which works when button is held in) and the headphone connectors. To the right, the vertically arranged frequency window. At the bottom of the front panel is the signal strength meter and Manual AGC/Radio control (they work). The front right half on the unit is in the best shape. The controls on the right side of the unit (all work) from top to bottom - the tuning knob, band selector (has a small window, the band range is signaled with the same color as the corresponding dial), the ON/volume control and finally the ON/squelch control (knob missing). Here is the list of issues - telescoping antenna is broke/missing out of unit, the battery holding area and cover are completely gone, plus numerous scratches and openings at the top of both sides damaged.
