Most of these marks are visible on the covers as the front panel appears to be in very nice condition. However, if you want to hear weak signals in the vicinity of strong signals, log utility stations, hear distant AM broadcasts, and tune into tropical or other unusual shortwave broadcasters, then the R-5000 is a nice receiver to help you accomplish this. As is typical of desktop communications receivers, a good outside antenna is important to utilize the weak signal recovery of the R-5000. However, this antenna can be something as simple as a longwire, a dipole, or even a Wellbrook antenna.As you can see, the R-5000 offers a wealth of opportunities for the avid listener. It is an exceptional piece of equipment, but not without a weaknesses. The weakness of the Kenwood was actually two-fold. Virtually all receivers have a keypad for direct entry of the frequency. However, they are set up like a calculator or telephone keypad which is typically not familiar to most users. The R-5000 keypad is set up in 2 rows and is a bit awkward to use. In addition, over time, the Kenwood R-5000 keypad was reported to develop bounce which means that you hit the keypad for a digit and instead of it registering one time, it may register two or more times. This can be more challenging for the user, but we did not notice this issue when testing this receiver. The solution to this bounce is to remove the cover from the Kenwood and solder a couple of inexpensive capacitors to the circuitry. On the CD that we are including, there is a key bounce fix accompanied by excellent pictures. However, personally, we dont do direct frequency input all that often with the R-5000 so it doesnt matter as much. Our method of tuning is to use the 1 MHz up / down keys to quickly move between bands and then turn the main dial to tune the correct frequency. We find that this method of tuning can be done as virtually as quickly as locating the individual keypad buttons and pressing them. This is a 6 KHz AM filter supplied by Kenwood as a replacement for the stock filters found inside the Kenwood R-5000 receiver and the TS-450, TS-850S, TS- 930, TS-940S and TS-950 transceivers. Kenwood supplied a filter with the R-5000 receiver, but it did not have very good skirt characteristics and this allowed interference from adjacent stations, whistles, and heterodynes. Kenwood released this upgraded filter which had better skirts and thus provides for a better receiving experience, but the filter was an investment over the original price and many owners chose to avoid the upgrade. As a result, this filter is highly sought after, but not so commonly found for sale. We have previously sold a number of Kenwood filters here on Ebay, but less commonly offer this YK-88A-1 filter. Installation of the filter in the R-5000 is easy. You remove the top cover for the R-5000 using a Phillips screwdriver (8 screws to remove) and then locate the stock AM filter inside the receiver. It is also held into place by 2 Phillips screws. Once you remove the screws for the filter, it unplugs and you then plug in this YK-88A-1 filter and use the 2 screws to secure it into place. You then replace the top cover and you are done with the installation....it is that easy and there is no soldering required. We expect that this process will take about 15 minutes to complete. We have not installed this filter inside any of the Kenwood transceivers, but suspect that installation is also easy and non-technical. Also included with this sale is a copy of the installation instructions and a copy of the IC-10 user manual. We found that the installation will take a little bit of time as the installer is required to remove both the top and bottom covers, loosen and remove a metal shield over the IC chip sockets, and then remove the 4 screws securing the front panel so that it can open and allow access to the IC sockets. There is no soldering and this is not an installation requiring technical skill. But the installer will need to handle the IC chips with care to insure that they are carefully installed without bending the small metal leads.In addition to these IC chips, the user will need to secure the proper computer RS-232 cable to connect between the receiver and your computer and also the proper operational software. The cable can be purchased on Ebay. The software may be purchased from a couple of different sources that typically supply receiver operational software.
