Up for auction is a pair of KEF Atmos-enabled R50 speakers. Both sound perfect but one has damage to the cabinet and some damage to the wave guide. The damage to the wave guide is seen in the last picture. One of the fins has snapped off. Although I cant hear any difference in the two speakers, I have run Dirac and included the result in the second last picture, which shows a difference in frequency response at the high end. I still have the fin which can most likely be easily reattached with some adhesive. A full replacement driver unit can be ordered from Kef. These Atmos speakers are widely regarded as some of the best upfiring speakers and are quite hard to find. KEF R50 Atmos Up Firing / Height speakers in Piano Gloss black, rare model above Q50a and below R8. These sold in US originally for $1200.As new, no marks on them, and sound amazing.The R50 utilises the brand’s trademark Uni-Q point source driver array. A 1in aluminium tweeter and ‘tangerine waveguide’ is positioned at the centre of a rigid 5in mid/bass unit, encircled by a distinctive surround to minimise distortion. The R50 is beautifully finished, sporting a piano gloss lacquer offset by contrasting silver drivers. Aesthetically, the enclosure looks gorgeous. While it’s tempting to leave the supplied clothe grille in the box, projector owners should note that the metallic drivers actually reflect the light from any front-facing PJ. This glinting could prove a distraction.Overall performance fittingly shines. The R50 is properly full-range, dropping low yet capable of crisp highs. Given that pretty much any object can be panned into the Atmos channel, it’s comforting knowing the R50 has the chops to respond – be it a sharp, dynamic report in American Sniper, or rousing, symphonic score in Jupiter Ascending.What I found truly remarkable, though, was the reach of the Atmos channel. Typically, rival Dolby boxes tend to attenuate at distance. However, I could sit the R50s on the front speakers a good 3.5m away from my couch and still enjoy an excellent sense of height. The overall soundstage was spacious (the Dolby Atmos demo clip Amaze offers grin-inducing insect effects) and naturalistic.The KEF R50 is easily the best-sounding Dolby Atmos speaker I’ve heard, both in terms of 3D clarity and effective dispersion.

KEF R5 Speakers - Gloss White Pair Floorstanding Loudspeakers. Opened less than a week, perfect condition.

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE A pair of Cambridge Audio R50 transmission line speakers using the classic drive unit lineup of KEF B139, B100 & T27 with Coles 4001 supertweeter. These are in original condition with almost unmarked cabinets, there is a small scratch in one side of one speaker and a small piece of veneer missing from one rear corner. Also the badge is missing from the front of one of the speakers. I have briefly tested them and confirmed all drive units are working. They were bought as a project for upgrading which has not yet been done and will come with a pair of Falcon Acoustics upgraded crossovers bought earlier this year at a cost of over £200. These use audio grade components and an updated circuit based on the acoustic Butterworth filter developed for the KEF 104ab. The new crossover also allows biwiring which would need additional connectors to be fitted to the speakers. My partner has a pair of similar HFA transmission line monitors with the same drive units and we can confirm the new crossovers will make a considerable improvement to the sound quality – in fact upgrading hers was the reason I went looking for these and I’m only selling them because I had an opportunity for a different upgrade which made these surplus. I don’t have boxes for these so collection only please, although I would consider delivering within a short drive from PL21, South Devon for £1 per mile.
