This is a vintage JVC-K5 cassette deck. The unit was tested and it works. The cassette door is damped and opens slowly. After opening the door several times, it loosen up and opened fine, it just needed some help to get started. The second picture in the series is an actual video recording of a short example of the sound during playback showing the meter readings. This is a vintage tape deck and it has not been used in years. I am the original owner, it has been kept with all of our stereo components in a smoke free home. Since we no longer have cassette tapes to play, it is time to let someone else enjoy this unit. Because of the units age and lack of use, I would advise the new owner to have the unit professionally cleaned and serviced.

I’m the original owner - bought it in 1981! Cassette tapes were the thing and this player sounded great and was solid and built like a tank in Japan. I used it exclusively to create mix tapes! It was a key part of my audio/stereo system until the early 1990’s. It shows a bit of wear on the top cover where I had an FM tuner sitting on it. Overall, it’s in very good condition. It’s been boxed up and stored in my closet for the last 20 years. It powers up perfectly and all functions work … and sounds great for cassette! This JVC model featured Super ANRS (tape noise reduction) for recording and play back. “ARNS” was developed by JVC as a proprietary noise reduction system much like Dolby B, in its day. It could use Metal formulation tape, SA (Sen-alloy) and Ferra-Chrome tape formulations. Metal tape sounded best with a much wider dynamic range. Operationally it was an open-loop, single capstan drive with 2 motors and two tape heads. Some of the features:MUSIC SEARCH - This is common now, but a cool feature for a 80’s vintage tape machine. SUPER ANRS, “noise reduction” - To my ears it sounded better then Dolby. The highs and upper mids seem bright and clear where, Dolby always seemed to cut the highs along with the noise. FREQUENCY RESPONSE original specs were output; 30-16hz. Wow and flutter was about 0.04. Signal to noise ratio was 60dB without NR, 70dB with. Sorry for the spec geek out – in other words, it sounds pretty amazing for a 1980’s cassette deck. Comes with manual and ships in original box. Sold-As-Is.
