Description
Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage Jensen C12PF C9635 12 inch woofers removed from my walnut-clad Model 5 three-way, four-driver speakers, USA- manufactured in 1974. As per the EIA source/date codes on the magnet covers, “2207416” and”2207421”, these woofers were made by Jensen (220) in the 16th and 21st weeks, respectively, of 1974. I believe these woofers are suitable for other period Jensen speakers, but the buyer is responsible for verifying compatibility with their needs. So, please see my large photos, the measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these capable Jensen woofers should become yours. These woofers are in clean, very good condition. They have sturdy textured paper cones that have no chips or cracks, just some minor edge scuffs and a spot of errant factory assembly epoxy on one. Plus, the textile voice coil dustcaps are dimple-free perfect. Also, the black-enameled steel baskets have no dents or undie oxidation, just some minor finish wear as pictured. And, there is some minor wear to the flange gaskets and one underside cabinet flange seal segment has gone missing, as pictured. Most importantly, the heavily-aged original polyurethane foam suspension was just replaced with modern polyether foam surrounds that have the correct “flat-attach” inner profile. The main drawback to most U.S. and foreign-made speakers from the early 1970’s to mid 1990’s was the use of foam for the woofer surrounds. Though foam offers excellent cone excursion, it invariably rots and/or disintegrates in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. Light is the culprit, seemingly, sunlight in particular. These woofers were no exception—the surrounds had dried up and fallen apart many years ago, taking the cherished Model 5 speakers out of service and into a closet. Sound familiar? Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know that it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I removed the hard paper flange gasket sections and carefully cleaned the cone edge/basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do thoroughly. Then, I glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Next, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after careful centering to ensure no voice coil rub. Lastly, the factory flange gaskets’ undersides were cleaned and they were neatly reapplied to the flanges. Overnight drying of the glue was allowed for each step of the process to achieve the clean and perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the improved polyether foam surrounds of today. Most importantly, these woofers have been fully tested after the new surrounds were installed and they sound terrific—very clear with exceptional midrange and solid low-end response. I also tested their DC resistance at a perfectly-matched 6.2? each, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges measure 12 1/16” in diameter, they stand 5¼” tall, and the mounting holes are spaced 8¼” adjacent (skipping a hole) / 11?” diagonal, c-t-c. This is a great find if your Model 5, or other suitable Jensen speakers, have been sitting idle with decayed surrounds and will have your cherished speakers sounding their finest once again in no time! As pictured and described, this pair of Jensen 12” woofers with painstakingly refurbished surrounds is offered at a competitive price.
