Audio quality is explained by the fact that ITT had previously been Kolster-Brandes, the originally-Canadian-then British-but-American-owned radio and audio equipment manufacturer based in an old silk mill in Foots Cray, then in Kent - and Kolster-Brandes had for many years been a world leader in audio technology. Its considerably better than expected, in fact, with rich tones and clarity far superior to its modern retro-style suitcase record player grandchildren. Incidentally, the company was known as ITT KB from 1968 to 1972, then ITT from 1972 until 1974; hence our date of 1973. An expensive purchase when new, they were out of reach of most teenagers, who of course represented probably 99% of all the people who wanted a record player they could carry around from place to place. As such, they were never particularly common, and with affordable compact cassette players (and, not too long afterwards, compact disc players) completely taking over the portable market from the early 1970s onwards, most of the ITT KP821s that were sold enjoyed only a few years of use before being trashed and replaced with something even smaller and lighter. They do show up for sale, but theyre rarely in this sort of condition. This particular one is also in full working order, though you probably dont want to go playing your Ludwig Led Zep and 1st state butcher covers on it - not least of all because the ST12 stylus appears to be the original one fitted at the factory. Fortunately, we keep a stock of horrible old 7-inch singles for precisely this purpose: selecting one at random, the player started, moved the tone arm automatically and then stopped just as it should; along the way surprising us with that unexpected audio quality which managed to make the record sound about as good as a Julio Inglesias record ever can. Speed settings, disc settings (7, 10, 12-inch), balance, volume, treble and bass controls all wor4k perfectly, too. Its in decent shape cosmetically too, with only a few minor scuffs and scratches to the exterior plastic parts and just a few spots of the Dulux cream emulsion that nearly every electronic item in the UK picked up during the 1980s. The wood veneer is very good, and there are no missing parts; in fact, the only obvious damage is one of the little tabs inside the speaker housings, used to wrap the speaker wire around during transport, has snapped off. Whats more, its been professionally PAT tested and certified safe to use with the mains cable and UK plug currently fitted.
