Offered for your consideration is a vintage pair of Infinity #902-5621 5¼ inch IMG (injection molded graphite) cone woofers removed from my Sterling Video speaker, manufactured c.1995. This pair bears 307851-001 on the magnet cover, but they’re definitely the 902-5621 that I’ve seen often. These magnetically-shielded mid/bass drivers were also used in the period Video 1 center channel and possibly some of Infinity’s other models from the 1990’s. So, please see my large photos, the measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these capable Infinity mid/bass drivers should be yours. These Infinity woofers are in clean, excellent condition. The IMG cones are in great shape with no detractions noted and the voice coil dustcaps are also perfect. Plus, the anodized steel baskets are in great shape as well with no dings, scratches, or oxidation. Most importantly, the aged original polyurethane foam suspension was just replaced with polyether foam surrounds. Many speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s through 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably falls apart in 10-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception—the surrounds were coming off the cone, badly cracked and sticky rotted. And, as I’m sure most know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time, so surround replacement is critical for a properly functioning speaker(s). Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. I first removed the plastic flange covers which was very difficult to do because of the strong adhesive used during assembly; I did incur one small crack that’s practically invisible. Next, I carefully cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory hot glue, which also takes some time to do correctly, and then glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Then, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. Lastly, the plastic flange covers were reapplied. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds! Naturally, these woofers have been fully tested after refoaming and sound terrific—very clear with fast, detailed lower midrange and good low-end for the platform size. As series-wired in the Sterling Video speaker, and crossed-over at 4.5kHz, they’re rated up to 150W, so it’s a sturdy platform. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a perfectly-matched 3.8? each, right in line with a nominal 4 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges measure 6” diameter (with the black plastic flange covers on), they stand about 3?” tall, and the mounting hole distances are spaced 3?” adjacent / 5½” diagonal apart, center-to-center. This is a great find if your Sterling Video, Video 1, or other suitable Infinity model has a blown woofer(s) or sits idle with decayed surrounds—your speaker will be sounding like new once again!
