Description
Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage Infinity #902-4165 8 inch IMG (injection molded graphite) cone woofers removed from my RS4001 speakers, manufactured c.1991. These capable mid/bass drivers were also used in the RS5001, RS6001, and possibly some other high-end Infinity speakers of the period, but the buyer is responsible for accurately verifying their suitability for any models other than those three from the RS-series. So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these splendid Infinity woofers are correct for your needs. This pair of Infinity 902-4165 woofers is in clean, excellent condition. The graphite cones are structurally perfect and so are the original voice coil cover center caps. Plus, the black anodized steel baskets are well preserved with no dings, scratches, or oxidation. Most importantly, the aged original polyurethane suspension was just replaced with modern polyether foam surrounds. Many speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s through 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception—the surrounds were sticky rotted and coming off of the cone with pieces missing. And, as I’m sure most know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time, so surround replacement is critical. Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I carefully removed the plastic flange gaskets which can be difficult because of the aggressive hot glue the factory used. One came off cleanly, the other took a good deal of prying which marred the inner perimeter, but neither broke which is a win with these. Next, I carefully cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do correctly, and then glued the inner surrounds to the cones. Then, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges after verifying no coil rub. Lastly, the flange gaskets were reapplied. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds! Most importantly, these woofers have been fully tested after refoaming and sound terrific—strong and very clear with fast, detailed midrange and good bass response for the platform size. Plus, their DC resistance tested at a perfectly-matched 4.3? each, consistent with a nominal 6 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 8½” (with flange cover in place), they stand around 3¾” tall, and the mount holes are spaced 5?” adjacent / 8” diagonal apart, c-t-c. In closing, this is a great find if your RS4001 or other suitable Infinity sits idle with decayed surrounds, or has a blown woofer(s), etc. Your speakers will be sounding like new once again! As pictured and described, this pair of Infinity 8” woofers with painstakingly restored surrounds is offered at a competitive price.
