British Thompson HoustonType D Form PM 12” Speaker Alnico magnet, paper cone Made in England c.1945-1955 I am pleased to be able to offer this unusual British speaker from a famous name of the early years of radio and amplified sound, BTH. It comes from the large collections of an elderly local man with a lifetime’s enthusiasm for radios and other sound-related classic equipment and now finally needs a new home, hopefully to be brought back to life after decades in storage. I’m afraid I have no information regarding this speaker’s original use, but it has been stored in a period Goodmans speaker box for a very long time. I’ve come across various earlier BTH products including crystal radios and horn speakers, but never a large driver speaker of this era, and I can find nothing at all online regarding specification and production dates of this particular model. I am told that their speakers were commonly used in cinemas and also installed in portable cabinets to be used with projectors. My best guess is a production date of around 1950. If any more expert viewers have better information, I’d be glad to learn more. It seems that these were made in relatively small numbers as so few apparently survive. The basket may have been re-sprayed at some time as there is a suspicious lack of wear and chips, and it remains glossy and clean. The other external parts are aged but clean and with no evident damage. The cone is free of any holes, decay or tears but there are two small blemishes that could be period repairs - these are pictured. It looks serviceable and is free of soiling. The dust cap is undented and firmly attached with no decay. I haven’t tested the speaker myself for fear of causing harm to it, so I can’t offer a mechanical guarantee or a performance review. I’m hoping to find an experienced buyer who will be able to test it properly and carry out any necessary maintenance or repairs should there be need of any.
