Restored Phase Linear 4000 Autocorrelation Preamplifier in Excellent condition The 4000 Autocorrelation Preamplifier was a collaboration design by Bob Carver and Bill Skinner. It was designed to expand or decompress the sonics of recorded material. In audio parlance, its called dynamic headroom. In the midst of all the knobs and toggles was the four channel balance joystick. The 4000 had the capability of controlling up to six components: a tuner, two tape decks, two turntables and an auxiliary input. It had three switched and three unswitched AC plugs. The 4000 was manufactured from 1973 to 1977. It retailed for $600 but the price rose 10 % in 1977. Its still highly sought after today. We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and transistors are checked for signs of stress or damage. Special attention is paid to the power supply which is the most common source of failure for preamps. We then power up the unit and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the low voltage output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise to get a baseline.At this point we will lubricate and clean all switches and potentiometers (that are not sealed) with a high quality contact cleaner, and then re-test all functions for any signs of noise or scratching. Vintage Phase Linear 400 Series Two Power Amplifier Factory rated at 210 watts per channel purchased by me on June 29, 1979 at a cost of $535.00 (Big money back then!). Amplifier has been meticulously taken care of (see photos) since day one and only moved (using factory box - see photos) 4 times. For its initial 10 years it powered my JBL 166 Horizon speakers and for the next 30 years it powered my JBL 4412 speakers and presently has been sitting on the same equipment shelf for past 30 years and most recently used to power my JBL 100 Classic speakers. Amplifier is ALL ORIGINAL and has never had the need to be serviced! In fact it still has the original fuses from the factory. The top plate has been removed by me a couple of times over the years to blow out dust. Amplifier is in Full working condition and both Volume knobs work smoothly and quietly. Both Meters work perfectly. Perfect candidate for a modern up grade (e.g. White Oak Audio) and then maybe it will last for another 45 years :-) Note: I’ve always utilized a Phase Linear Fan Kit to keep the amplifier running as cool as possible - but a fan is probably only needed for Demanding low efficiency 4 ohm speakers. Fan kits are available on e-bay. Amplifier will be shipped in it’s Original Factory Box (see photos) and an additional “Double box” will be used to help avoid damage to the original Factory Box in shipping.
